I just made some butter!

I've got old wooden butter pats and butter moulds :)

You've just reminded me I have some pats too, with zigzag ridges. Hmm, might try this. Would it work with a blender do you think? Not got a mixer.

Roughly how much butter would you get from 500ml double cream?? I have no idea if that's the quantity dc is sold in!!

Butter is bloody expensive these days. How much is double cream?!

Ity fuckin is, my mate - Well over a pound a block in fuckin lidl. If these austerity meausures mean I have to start using margerine then you will see marches on downing street. Except I'll be too crippled by osteomalacia to get there.

over 2 quid a block in the shop nearest me.

Inspired by this thread, I churned up 2 pints of cream this morning.

And am just about to pull a sourdough loaf out of the oven, made with the buttercream

Gotta say, I wasn't expecting *that much* cream to end up on the walls :D
Shouldn't you be writing up? ;)

I have taken to home churning all our butter, as it seemed daft not to.

Started on a Sunday evening when we had no butter in, but we DID have half a lot of one-day-past-sell-by cream. And a light went off.

The buttermilk is a proper bonus - actually works out cost effective thumbs

Since when, I have been gifted a pair of finest butter bats, and have committed to freeing myself from the grip of the butter industry.

Thumbs.

I've made butter by just putting the cream in a jar, covering it and shaking it for about 8 minutes. Works perfectly.

That what we did at primary school in the late 70s - an empty coffee jar, and a bit of greaseproof under the lid to stop leaks. The whole class took in turns to shake it, like a weird game of pass the parcel.

I can't remember that far back, but I suspect it took a tad longer than 8 minutes to produce the butter...

Oh god me too...Much to the disgust of those around me. Another real treat I "invented" fairly recently....muesli and "leftover" sour cream.

I don't see why anyone would get freaked out by it - it's no different to drinking milk really. I just spoon it out of the tub until it's all gone. :)
