How much would you spend on a mattress?

I think it's fair to say that Mrs Suplex is winning this thread hands down  :D :p
It's odd because back in Japan we sleep on a half inch thick mat on the floor (£20 maybe) with a 30cm hard bean pillow, and it is a great nights sleep for both of us.
One of the problems is that we both like the hard mattresses and all the ones we look at are all soft and springy.
We found one we like for about £800 (half price) but I can't understand why it's nearly 30cm thick.

I've always rented so never needed to buy a mattress and if you do need to get a bed for an unfurnished flat, people are always chucking old sofa beds out and they tend to be comfier than normal beds which tend to be horribly soft as you have mentioned.

One of the best nights sleep of my life was sleeping on a duvet on the floor with a thinner duvet on top of me.
If I wasn't married I would simply do that every night.
I did my back in once and was advised to sleep on the floor. I've never slept so well!

I have done my back in many a time and people always say try sleeping on the floor but it depends on your personal physiology.
For me, well, I just couldn't even get on to my back or side.
I think the deeper, springy but firm mattresses suite a wider range of people so that's why they are so popular but obviously not every one.

AS, why don't you get a cheapish Ikea jobby (they do thin firm ones) and if your wife is not comfortable, get a topper, not necessarily memory foam, that she likes.
You might even be able to get a single topper just for her side which would be even cheaper :D

About £500 for the current one (paid for out of a backpayment), but really whatever it costs for the right one is worth it.

Very much this. A huge number of back ailments are caused by crap mattresses. It makes such a difference to have a good quality one.

What is normal?

I went to alders the other day and they are all like £1000 to £2000
Some nice ones, most are in a half price sale but they are still about £700 or £800 quids and that seems rather steep to me.
We paid less than that, including delivery from Norris.

I bought a memory foam one for £500 some years ago. It is definetly the best mattress I've had but I'm not convinced it's the best I've slept on. My mate's mattress on her psare bed is ace. I always sleep well at her house, I could ask what it is if you like?

Could you import those if they suit you that well?

AS, a half inch, seriously? That's 12mm, like those camping mats :hmm: ie fuck all
Enough to block a draught coming through floorboards and to raise you off a slightly cold damp floor, or to level out the surface under you though.

Yeah but that ain't ultimate comfort. fwiw a Tempur memory foam mattress gave me the best sleep ever.

I'm still doubtful of AS's claims. Mind you, he is a bit strange.

Interestingly, I sleep on an orthopaedic mattress, a quilted mattress cover, a duvet and a fleecy blanket. With a duvet and blanket covering me. Well fucking comfortable :)

You can get quite a comfy foam ting for about £350-450 from Dreams, called a readymat or summat. More money = more memory foam on top of the normalty foam.

Me and the Mr made do on about 20cm of cheap foam over wood till we got given one of these 'readymat' tings. It still took a bit of getting used to, but is still not as much of a leap as a sprung mattress.

I personally don't care about mattresses that much but the wife thinks the one we have had for 10 years is impossible to sleep on. We have already removed it and are sleeping on the fold out chair beds foam mattress (which again is fine for me).

They are all these horrible big bulky things that don't actually seem all that comfy to me for the price.

I spent a few bucks on a bed a few years ago. It's like Minnie said. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed. It's worth it.

We bought an amazing pocket sprung mattress nearly ten years ago now and it's still going strong. I actually look forward to sleeping in our bed when we come home from holiday, it's that comfortable. I can't remember how much it cost - maybe £500+ (heavily discounted). Definitely worth spending as much as you can afford.

The cheapo mattress I bought when I got my first flat was knackered after about five years, btw.

We spent £500 on our mattress about 10 years ago - well worth it. Have hardly had any back troubles since. It'll need replacing in a bit but will spend as much as I can afford when the time comes.

They have doubled up in this picture, and actually it looks a lot thicker than what I have slept on anyway. I tried doing a picture seach but found all these supposedly Japanese futon companies selling all kinds of bollocks, nothing like they have in japan

Different strokes for different folks, as mentioned before I tried a Tempur and hated it.

I'd spend as much as I could afford if I needed a new one - my current one is a good quality orthopaedic mattress which was in a sale and with a further discount because I bought it with a bed-frame - the entire lot cost me £1k, but original pre-sale price (for both frame and mattress) was around £2k - I expect the bed frame to last my entire life though, and the mattress has some life in it yet, I look after it and turn it regularly and it's in very good condition still. Do shop around because it's no good buying sight unseen, you need to have a lie down on the thing and see how it feels - even if you later order it somewhere else online at a cheaper price.

I already have a bed, plus having a room dedicated to sleeping is a bit of a crazy rich persons luxury in japan so my wife loves it.
Real Japanese futons only come as singles, and plopping two on a bed frame wouldn't work.

Yeah that's all very well, but due to arthritis I haven't been able to get down to the floor in years, and if I made it down there I'd have difficulty getting back up again. I have to have handrails in my bathroom ffs.

So? Keep the bedroom but get rid of the bedframe.

We have a futon, obviously an English one, but I like it a lot. I think we have a 6 layer king size or super king from this company:

http://www.futonshop.co.uk/futon_mattresses.php

They make to order. They start at 4 layer but maybe they'll do less if you ask them. My last one was used by me for 10 years and then we folded it over so it's single bed size and my eldest uses it - that's been another 2 years use. Our new one felt too soft for a few weeks but it doesn't take long for them to firm up.

Costs up to £500.
