How much would you spend on a mattress?

I started pricing up for a new mattress about a year ago, but soon realised that we were talking hundreds for a decent one, and that I really couldn't afford to get it wrong, but didn't have the energy to get it right, so I gave up and used the money on replacing my garden fence which fell over in the high winds a few months ago.

Apparently, having a mattress which is too hard is actually bad for your back, particularly if you are overweight, because it puts pressure on your hips, and the small of your back, and is not good for people with prolapsed discs!
Gosh - I had forgotten about this post :)

I did buy a new mattress about 3 years ago. I got a pocket sprung one with a layer of memory foam. It is great.

I can't remember how much it was, but I really think it is helping my prolapsed disc.

I would spend on a mattress:

If I had it.

I admit to having a series of second hand mattresses - the latest came from daughter's ex-chap...and has been terrific. The one before that was awful - we put up with it for 2 years, just thinking we were getting old and decrepit...until getting this one. Dread it falling apart. We have never bought a new sofa either (pointless with kids and dogs). In fact, I have only ever bought 2 new washing machines and a new vacuum cleaner in a whole lifetime of dodgy 'pre-loved' household items.
The most comfortable one I have ever had was a feather mattress given to me by spouse's granny. Unfortunately, the pregnant lurcher loved it too and tried to chew a huge corner to make a nest. I am planning on getting a feather topper for in the horsebox as we sleep above the cab and anything deeper than 4inches means being squashed against the roof.

I think up to about 1000 is fair enough. If its awesome. Spent like 600 on a bed and matress recently and if I was in a relationship and buying it with someone could easily have spent more.

Couple of grand? Phwoah no! Im too tight.

Anyone tried one of the 'mattress in a box' style that seem to be all the rage?
I'm eyeing up a Herdysleep, because I have a soft spot for the herdy company *rolleyes* and they get good reviews. On the other hand, I don't see how a sprung mattress can be rollable into a little box! :hmm:

The one I just got from IKEA was rolled and is sprung. I assume they must just do it carefully and in a way that's sympathetic to the springs normal movement. Not like cramming clothes in a full suitcase :D

Have just ordered one, so I'll let you know come the weekend.

As for the box, I believe they use fairly small, short springs in two different layers. They can't be more than 3-4cm tall and maybe twice that in length and width. That's what allows them to roll up.

Yes and no. The Otty mattress sets out its stall by showing you their 10cm spring next to Simba's couple of cm spring.

I dunno. Springs are springs. If you vacuum pack a mattress does it not force the spring to completely compress?

Which one did you go for?

Sorry, I meant the herdysleep but I can see how that was a bit unclear. My main issue with our current mattress (other than it's nine years old and getting a bit saggy in spots) is the sweatiness of it, so the claimed breathability of it appealed. Especially with Mrs.Chz having her hormone change going on right now. I need my own duvet, or I'll wake up with a damp one on top of me!

Oh shit I really need a new mattress. I have a decade old, memory foam one that is very worn, dipped in the middle and is making me stiff and achey.

I tried an eve one in a shop - want! but I'm blanching at the thought of spending about £500.

Was the eve one nice?

We need a new one so badly. Current one is 14 year old memory foam that is almost solid in places and doing neither of our old bodies any favours.

Not driving means that trying some out is hard work and as an inherently lazy person I just want to buy one from the internet. But it's a big risk.

Herdysleep has been pretty nice, despite only two nights. It doesn't feel luxurious, but it's medium-firm and the telling bit is that I slept well and nothing ached in the morning. Which hasn't been the case for quite a while. So I'm happy with it. Especially in the warm evenings right now, the wool breathes a lot better than the foam did.

Plus you get a Little Herdy with it.

I liked it and really want one. They had some on display in one of the dept stores in Oxford st.

There is a building next to my office to which I regularly see eve mattresses being delivered. For £50 I will give you the address and what time they shut in the evening. The rest is up to you.

Excellent :D How long does it take from getting it out of the box to being able to sleep on it?

a dozen years ago i spent about $800. just the right firmness (1% short of "hard as a rock"), is as strong today as when i bought it, not breaking down one bit.
i'm a tightwad and that was some of the best money i've ever spent. sleep is too important.

They say to leave 24 hours, but buggrit. We gave it 6 and just made sure to rotate it a couple of times in the first week so it filled out evenly. No weird smells to worry about.

The missus loves it, I merely like it. As I said, I wake up ache-free but it doesn't have that "Ahhhhhhh!"-ness to it when I first lie down that I'd like to have. Admittedly, the no pain bit is the more important one. :)
