How do you jam your bread?

How do you top your bread?

I don’t need lessons on that from somebody who thinks that jam is as good as it gets.
i don't think that (in fact i had to chuck out some mouldy marmalade last night as I use it so infrequently). i just think food should be enjoyed, including jam, so why be meagre with your jamming or buttering, unless you have health problems or at risk of developing them

Quite. The way to control sugar intake is to limit proccessed foods, soft drinks, sweetened tea/coffee, etc, etc ...

Not to eat jam badly!

Everybody is at risk of developing health problems. Why do you think you’re immune?

Remember that I’m not saying don’t eat jam. I’m saying that Spymaster’s “amazement” that somebody would only want a thin spread of it is due to a shortcoming on his part.

For a start, I don’t using up my daily sugar ration on mediocre mass-produced crap, thinking that means I know how to have fun
This is another area where you're going wrong. You shouldn't use mediocre mass produced crap. There's loads of very high quality stuff out there if you put a bit of effort in.

wrong. the right way to do it is so you can enjoy it, so no meagre smears. lots of jam occasionally or none at all

I do eat jam sometimes. It’s homemade by a neighbour. It’s better than the likes of Bonne Maman but it’s still not worth going crazy for.

I don’t need a tonne of it to be able to taste it just fine. I’m not so inured to sugar that I can’t taste it without overloading on it.

only if you explicitly measure what you're eating every day. i'm not that crazy
No, it’s still a ration whether or not you exceed it. I’m not claiming that I explicitly measure what I’m reading against it, but the ration still exists and I still have a basic awareness of where I am against it.

Bon Maman's Intense range is good (apricot, strawberry or raspberry) made with a bit more fruit than sugar compared to their conserves.
I do find most commercial jam far too sweet. I currenty favour only Lidl's sour cherry or Frank Copper's marmalade. I made some plum and rhubarb a couple of years ago using half the sugar. That was great.

Tell me of other sour or tart jams!
Łowicz (in Polski shops) has 100% fruit jams that are considerably less sweet than usual. And not outrageously expensive either, considering.
Even their regular jams are lower in sugar than most.

Where is the nutella option?
(on toast, with butter)

I am not sure I could feasibly use 'jam' as a verb either. I spread, dollop, spoon and (rarely) smear...but I definitely don't jam anything.

And finally (because I am out of sorts today), I never eat (make) jam. Only the finest, crystal clear jellies emerge from my pans (with all evidence of seed, skin and pulp consigned to the compost.

There’s about 20 calories per teaspoon of jam. I don’t think that’s enough to worry about unless you are using large amounts of jam on your toast.

Also...I often get sugar free jam. They use grape juice instead of sugar in the jam making.
