Hammersmith Bridge closed to motor vehicles "indefinitely"

It looks great but proper vehicle access is still needed. There's too much distance between Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge for there not to be a proper vehicle crossing and the traffic/pollution that this creates along upper Richmond Road from Mortlake through Putney is terrible.

This is a farce now.
Dismantle it, put it in a park somewhere, build a proper bridge.
I have to agree.

the current bridge is not fit for purpose.
it has value has a historical curiosity, but it has (near enough) zero value as a bridge over the Thames.
get rid. it belongs in a museum. build a replacement that buses can use again.

the desire to preserve the past in aspic is as bad as nimbyism for opposing all developments to make the present / future a bit better for people.

It's unlikely I think to ever open to vehicular traffic ever again.

I know at the moment they have built a big jig somewhere off site, a jig the size of the bridge, and have been practising jacking it up off it's pedestals (the next step in stabilisation).

I think there is a fair chance that they will realise it's too risky a process and leave it as it is, open to peds and cyclists etc.

If they decide to go for the next step, actually jacking the bridge up, all evenly, it may fail and fall into the river.

Building double decks for vehicles is just a dream at the moment.

Wandsworth Bridge closing for 10 weeks from July...
Yeah, came here to post about that - it'll fuck up my journey for that period  Hope they manage to complete it within schedule! Wandsworth bridge has had lanes closed for I don't even know how long now... Over 2 years? Traffic used to flow nicely Northbound but that hasn't happened in a long time. Might try Battersea Bridge instead of Putney Bridge for crossing...

It will screw up most of my journeys and I rarely use the bridge. Its also going to screw up many bus journeys. Traffic around the gyratory has been hell for months now.

I find it ridiculous that it has to be repaired at all when the most cost efficient solution is to just replace it. Listed status is all well and good when there's a convincing argument to preserve historic landmarks but at £250 Million and 5 years (and counting) of no cars and busses - that argument is starting to look pretty weak. I don't think it's impossible that they can preserve the aesthetic of the original Hammersmith Bridge while building something new and robust.

The knock on effects this has had around Putney, Barnes, Mortlake, East Sheen etc in respect of traffic has been tremendous. The Upper Richmond Road is gridlocked a lot of the time. It can be a matter of life and death when we're talking ambulances etc.

Hammersmith Bridge will re-open to cyclists, cargo bikes and e-scooters from Tuesday 13 February.

We’ve created a new two-way central lane across the bridge to allow greater access to residents, visitors and businesses on both sides of the river. Spanning three metres wide, the cycle lane is likely to remain open for around 10 weeks.

This means that cyclists will no longer have to dismount and walk their bikes across, which frees up the footways for pedestrians.

Those Hammers on their boat caused £100,000 damage when they crashed into the bridge. If it never opens to motor vehicles again you know who to blame.

The longer this goes on, the less I care about preserving the old bridge. It's entirely possible to create a replica which keeps the aesthetic and gets a fully functioning road.
