Hammersmith Bridge closed to motor vehicles "indefinitely"

how many times has London Bridge been demolished and replaced? Western stretch of the Thames is slacking and needs to catch up.

No need to waste money on fripperies - a functional concrete bridge would be sufficient.

Sure, but I think it would be a shame to dismiss its heritage entirely and create some boring functional bridge like London Bridge. Respecting the aesthetic of the original and building a futureproof bridge doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. I think this is a compromise people should get behind.

They could do a concrete one and then install projectors to display fancy architecture on it. Cheap and aesthetically pleasing enough for you.

Remember that pub they had to rebuild brick by brick after knocking it down. I'm applying the same logic. Inevitably it's better and more modern now under the surface, but they've created an aesthetically identical exterior. This to me seems to be the best compromise rather than patching up an ageing structure at great cost and delay.

This would do fine as a replacement. Its even a similar colour.

a concrete bridge spanning some railway tracks in Belfast, with the cityscape in the background. a white and a black car are passing across the bridge. The parapets are covered in green paint and lots of graffiti.
