Hackney chitter-chatter &tc

Just thinking of those management contract days - it was quite wild west at the time - a lot of players bidding for the contracts which could be lucrative - I think a lot of HAs thought they might be be able to get some stock transfers as a result. Probably a bit of skullduggery in the bidding process - people moving between HAs , possibly with knowledge of contracts :hmm: . We took on the Stoke Newington contract from another player Pinnacle, but one of the things they had done was to pay the bar tab of a resident who was chair of a TRA, apparently he didn't pay for a drink in the Rose and Crown for several years whilst they had the contract - apparently, allegedly, from what I hear, etc.
Always found it dubious how Hackney South M.P. Brian Sedgemore got a position on the board of Sanctuary Housing Association after they received a load of council properties by stock transfer. They received quite a few large houses in the north of the borough for a quid each that the council had evicted squatters from, smashed up the amenities to deter future squatters then left them rot for years until they sold them at a massive profit.

marty21 a big issue for our estate is that the council moved in a large number of “problem” / needy tenants immediately before it went over to Southern. So tbf they inherited more than their fair share of difficulties.

Interesting insights as usual, thanks all.

That's nasty , took some planning, did they move "nice " tenants out to create space? Must admit , I didn't know Hackney did any stock transfers.

More structural problems in Stokey - I was down there earlier today and noticed a cordon outside the Rochester Castle pub, apparently a piece of masonry has fallen down!
Some people from the Highways department arrived soon afterwards. I couldn't actually see anything though.
blimey, that is fairly close to where the last lot came tumbling down which led to the High Street being closed off.

Yes I know, almost opposite!
Think it's been mentioned before but a few years ago there was another case of masonry being blown down on a very windy day - further up the High Street, a building on the corner of a side road.

not the rochester :(

For anyone venturing out, the 76 is on diversion. Instead of going across Old St roundabout and down City Rd, it's going left along Old St, down Gt E St, via Lpool St then back up Wormwood St. Of course first I found out about this was when we went on diversion.

(Are they EVER going to finish the work at Old St roundabout/station? 😱)

It is taking a very, very long time. There have been cities built in China quicker than Old st tube getting done.

Yes, when I was in Haggerston this afternoon I noticed the 76 and guessed it must be on diversion. I came by the 243 from Kingsway and that was on diversion too, didn't turn down Old Street but went through Aldersgate and back round to the A10 in Bishopsgate.

On another note, the Rochester Castle pub in Stokey is now open again. There is scaffolding up to the first floor but you can walk through on the pavement.

Interesting set of photographs taken in 1976 by Thierry Girard when he was first learning about photography, mainly Hackney and some from Tower Hamlets boroughs...

The Strip joint ones made me smile - I wondered where in Dalston that pub had been as I didn't recognise the name, the building is now the Halifax Building Society on the corner of Kingsland High Street and Gillett Square :D

Remember the Happy Man Tree which was sadly felled for the new Woodberry Down development :( I see there is a doccumentary film about the attempt to save it on at the Castle Cinema on May 16th.

Interesting ! That Woodberry Down development has been going on for decades! I had some involvement in 2002/3 ! I wasn't involved in any tree cutting.

Yes, the new development is an on going thing as the old blocks have to be gradually demolished first, goodness knows when it will be completed!
