Hackney chitter-chatter &tc

I always thought it was a bit odd to open those sort of fashion places in Hackney, it's more of an 'alternative' street fashion type area.
Why would people that buy designer stuff make a journey to Morning Lane when they can already buy elsewhere.
It was really stupid and short-sighted because no money would go into the local economy, people would come and get their clothes and fuck off. And that's if the shops had stayed open. They were mostly empty 4 years ago

Stoke Newington High Street is now open again to traffic

I'm sure the bus drivers and the people who live in the side roads which the other vehicles have been using will be very pleased!
Scaffolding still up in front of the small block of shops but you can walk under it.
Yeah, I just drove up there at lunchtime.

I pass the Burberry shop quite a lot, and I'm always impressed how busy with tourists it is.

that's a wicked bit of scaffoldery!

Not in Hackney at the moment so will miss the usual Purim madness. This probably fair enough and maybe overdue actually:

Not strictly Hackney, but this may be of interest to some on this thread

A lot of the blocks around there were run down in the nineties and noughties and it was suggested this was so the tenants would be more amenable to stock transfer to a housing association or ALMO.

Now that housing has been brought back in house I guess incompetence was also a big factor then and now…
May have mentioned this before, but I was involved in the ALMO consultation, went to loads of meetings with residents, chatted to Defend Council Housing (who I was impressed with) . Originally Hackney did not want the status quo option on the ballot , but following the consultation they were forced to. Didn't do any good as the ALMO vote went through anyway (the promise of all that funding) . Not sure what happened afterwards but it seems clear that a lot of blocks weren't improved.

marty21 there were a few corruption scandals with the Hackney ALMO, which I think was a factor in housing coming back under council control.

Tbf the same thing happened in the 90s with my old estate in Stoke Newington moving over to Southern Housing - lots of promises and “well they can’t be worse than the council” talk. But then same old same old.

Southern Housing probably had a management contract , they were in vogue in the 90s - I worked for PCHA, who had a subsidary called Pathmeads , who bid for management contracts at local authorities - they were quite successful - had a few contracts in Hackney - in my year with them, I worked out of 3 council offices - Well St, The Clock House in Stamford Hill, and Stoke Newington Town Hall. I'm not sure if we were better than Hackney Council tbf, but there were a fair few things that came out at the time which suggested Hackney Housing Management at the time was good at turning a blind eye. IIRC, the Nightingale Estate came under our management, along with around 70 Squatted flats . And I remember one colleague telling me about an employee at the estate who had taken day release for a course, once a week, every week, for 7 years and had never produced evidence to his manager of where he was going the course, or what course he was doing. Part of me was impressed that he got away with it for so long (presumably also taking his full leave entitlement too)

it's amazing how things can be worse than the worst that you knew

Just thinking of those management contract days - it was quite wild west at the time - a lot of players bidding for the contracts which could be lucrative - I think a lot of HAs thought they might be be able to get some stock transfers as a result. Probably a bit of skullduggery in the bidding process - people moving between HAs , possibly with knowledge of contracts :hmm: . We took on the Stoke Newington contract from another player Pinnacle, but one of the things they had done was to pay the bar tab of a resident who was chair of a TRA, apparently he didn't pay for a drink in the Rose and Crown for several years whilst they had the contract - apparently, allegedly, from what I hear, etc.
