Hackney chitter-chatter &tc

The fortieth anniversary of the killing of Colin Roach at Stoke Newington Police Station passed a few days ago with very little publicity, although one suspects that many of those who took place in the resulting protests may still live in and around the area:

Lest We Forget.

Who remembers the good old days when you could pay a bent council employee a grand and a be given keys to a flat?

I had some involvement with the Nightingale Estate about 20 odd years ago. I worked for a HA which took over the management, when they looked into the estate , they found 50+ squatted flats. I wasn't anti-squatting , just preferred it in privately owned places, the culture in that article was still present 10 years later.

I thought you might have been aware of this Marty! Interesting. I think if the council or HA is so rubbish that they have thousands of empties then squatting is fair enough... there's narrative arc behind all this where Hackney changed from being a place where most people wouldn't want to live to somewhere that is too expensive for most people to live...

The working culture at that time was shocking tbf , we came across one member of staff who'd been on day release for a college course , 1 day a week , 52 weeks a year , for 7 years. The manager hadn't asked for any proof of this "course". It was a mighty blag tbf .

From Hoxton based (by the canal where the Hackney sharks live) Antipavilion's FB page... :hmm:

Following the High Court declaration that the police raid on Antepavilion was unlawful. The Met have told us they have “mislaid” the thousands of pounds worth of bamboo, cables, tools and other items they seized from #hoxtondocks 18 months ago.

Coincidentally, in May, when Priti Patel gave a speech at the Met. training camp to promote her authoritarian anti-protest bill, a strikingly similar structure was shown in the background.

what happens in this sort of case, where the cops have stolen stuff (unlawful seizure) but claim now not to know what's become of it? i suppose a dollop of compo, surely they can't simply go 'we've lost it' and there's no consequences

Oh that's horrid for your mate Sue

Wasn't there another building collapse not for from there in recentl memory too? Or bits falling off a roof or something. Not good.
Looks like they'll be out till at least Monday but who knows what that means.

Yep. :(

Update on the building damage, I've been out walking this afternoon and went into Stokey to have a look - the whole of that section of the road is closed off now and scaffolding has been put right across it
There is no access to the pavements on either side and all the shops are closed.
You can only get round via Brook Road on the one side and the little passageway by Kynaston Gardens on the other side.

I guess the damage done must be deemed quite serious!

Yep , just walked past there , nightmare for drivers , main road & the side roads are mostly LTNs. Which is why I walked there .

Yeah, now that so many roads are closed to through traffic, this sort of closure creates even more disruption than it otherwise would. I had to make a huge detour on Friday afternoon, and none of the ways I first thought of were viable any more.

Presumably the road will still be closed on Monday, and I'm guessing loads of buses will be diverted too, which will be chaos for commuters.
