Guardian: 'Isis' flag flown in East London

And they've changed it:

'Jihadist' flag flown in east London
Flag flown outside housing estate on Poplar High Street

Bet they have it wrong in the print edition, though. Embarrassing stuff, paper. Hard to retro-proofread.

E2A: But the night desk is in a bit of a panic and has screwed it up:

In a highly provocative gesture, the emblem was planted on top of the gates of the Will Crooks estate on Poplar High Street, and is surrounded by flags of Palestine and slogans.

The flag bears similar writing to the jihadi flags that have been flown by the extremist group in Iraq and other jihadi groups since the 1990s. When the estate was approached last night, a group of about 20 Asian youths swore at Guardian journalists and told them to leave the area immediately. One youth threatened to smash a camera.

You were trying to delete the wrong references to "the extremist group", sillies!

having had the pleasure of meeting observer journalists while working in another job some years ago i too would swear at guardian journalists.

Except Norton-Taylor and a couple of others, correct.

In any case I have a deep-rooted suspicion that the people being sworn at were in fact some kind of "citizen journalist" aka busybodies. Or possibly fashion hacks on their day off.

Is it the Islamic Courts flag? I would expect it more likely to be something related to the Taliban. My understanding of the Tower Hamlets muslim community is that it is strong links with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Not that I can see. The Islamic Courts are a Somali thing; and there are many Somalis in Tower Hamlets; but the implication is that the yoot involved were Bangladeshi. Which makes me think...

No idea the exact flag type, all I do know is that the amount of flags that are black background/white arabic writing hung up on a street is directly proportional to the speed our local drivers prefer especially in Tripoli (Lebanon).

Whoever went down to fail to take a picture didn't even get as sophisticated as that.

Headline should have been "Aieee! White Arabic on black! Evil eye!"

(Not that they could neccessarily tell Arabic from Bengali script...)

The round white bit is a replica of the Seal of the Prophet Muhammad: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=t...=862#q=seal+of+the+prophet+muhammad+&tbm=isch

As in below:

If it had been a swastika flag on a white estate in say, Essex, people on here wouldn't be so blasé about it as they are being. One would think that after the Lee Rigby case people would be a little bit less willing to give Jihadi flags the benefit of the doubt. Do people here think that the person or persons who hung up that flag are anything other than extremists and perhaps a potential threat?

What'smore hanging a Jihadi flag beside a Palestian ones is what the fucking murdering zionists are trying to do. It's not non news either because it is, out there, in the press and causing concern to a broader and rightly less tolerant public.

Ah! It was Ted Jeory: deep into local politics.

The shabab are definitely out of order - and deeply ignorant.

Anybody actually identified the flag yet?

Nope. Most likely seems to be a non-standard version of the "There is no god but" text. I am told that the word "Allah" is visible on the bottom line.

Establishing what it is is essential to establishing what there is to be concerned about, silly treelover .

So a flag that may or may not be appropriated by violent groups flew for several hours in London. Despite the symbol also being a recognised symbol of the Islamic faith.

Struggling to see why this is news....Oh, wait.

The Shahada is the absolute cornerstone of faith. It belongs to no one and everyone.
