greece vs argentina / south korea vs nigeria

I was trying to work out why the guys covering the S.Korea game are in the parking lot, but it's because the lads on BBC1 are in the proper studio :D

Garth Crooks is very funny when he is incredulous. As for why the African teams havent done that well, its because the best African team is not at the tournament.

Egypt?

Dunno why they always do so well in the ACON but shit in WC qualifying. Agree they have some mint players though.

Yep, they are a class act though as you say their World Cup record is nowhere near as good as their record in the Cup of Nations. That said, had they managed to win that game in Sudan (and they should have) they would have provided a much sterner test than Algeria have done, and would almost certainly have battered England.

Agreed. Aboutrika would have been a class act in SA. He'll be too old next time round probably. Mind you, he could do a Hossam Hassan.

On a related aside, it does make one wonder how they have managed to keep so many of their great players in the Egyptian league - after all, them being the best side in Africa isnt exactly a recent phenomenon, either at (continental) international or club level; and its also curious to ask whether them keeping all their best players is what provides the consistency.

Of course, it did look as if it was going to happen when Zaki was a success in the early days at Wigan... maybe Moteab will be a success at Liege and more players will be looked at? Then again, since noone appears to have ever seriously looked at Aboutrika despite at least five years of him being the bollocks, maybe not.

I feel sorry for Nigeria. So close, but SO close of scoring the goal, but those two misses are hard to explain at this level. Still, it was an highly entertaining match - the second half was one of the best in the competition.

I gather the Egyptian league pays the best wages in Africa - the Egyptian clubs, esp Al Ahly, are supported throughout North Africa and the Middle East - so I suppose it might partly be the Mexico effect. Even so, why the likes of Aboutrika have never been picked up by a European side is beyond me.

Disappointed that Nigeria finally managed to show what they can do whilst going out of the competition. On the other hand I'm growing to rather enjoy watching the South Koreans, and I can't say that I'll miss Greece. I still think Argentina have weaknesses in defence that top teams are going to expose, so I don't see them going a lot further.

True but with their front line I think the idea is keeping the ball and forcing opposition wing backs to stay in their own half. Also their defence isn't that bad...certainly no worse that Germany or England's.
