Glastonbury 2023

Disappointed that iPlayer hasn't shown Lana Del Rey's set. She was 30mins later to start, then got cut off at midnight and got everyone singing Video Games... Sounds like a very eventful set ;). Is iplayer not showing it because? Seems a bit mean.

Lana Del Rey's highly-anticipated Glastonbury set hit the headlines before she even travelled to Worthy Farm.

And, after her gig last night, the 38-year-old's performance has continued to dominate the Twitter-sphere and those visiting Glastonbury this weekend as she arrived on stage 30-minutes late and was cut off midway through her set.

Here we take a look at the brutal battle between Glastonbury and Lana Del Rey, which resulted in a chaotic set which everyone is talking about...

War of the words

The American singer-songwriter had a war of the words with the popular festival's organisers in the lead-up to the big weekend.
Lana appeared to be angered when she spotted a 'mix-up' with the line-up announcement.
The original line-up post listed Arctic Monkeys, Guns N' Roses, Elton John and Lizzo before listing the remaining acts in alphabetical order.
Lana's name was below more than 20 other acts and the singer complained the poster failed to recognise she was headlining the Other Stage.

Lana had a war of the words over how the headline acts were announced

Writing on Instagram in a later deleted post, Lana sarcastically said: "Thanks for announcing that I was headlining the other stage. Thumbs up."

She also took to her private Instagram to share the poster and added: "Well, I’m actually headlining the 2nd stage. But since there was no consideration for announcing that, we’ll see," appearing to threaten to not show up.

The poster was subsequently re-released with Lana's name bumped up to the second row along side other big artists and Other Stage headliners including Lil Nas X, Wizkid and Yusuf/Cat Stevens.

Despite her earlier fury, Lana later confirmed she would be performing on The Other Stage.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 1 in March, DJ Clara Amfro asked whether she's still planning to headline at Glastonbury, she said: "I am, I am, I am, I am. I've been excited to tell people, so I wanted to tell people because, as we started to announce some festivals, its unfathomable to me to headline the second stage of Glastonbury.

"They had asked me to play Glastonbury the last three years but we just weren't ready. I didn't want to say yes before we had a big band."

Late arrival and boos from the crowd

Blue Jeans singer Lana was due to take to The Other Stage and perform her headline set at 10.30pm.

Eager crowds began to gather around the performance area to watch the singer – but festival-goers began to grow impatient when he didn't show up on time.

Fans even threatened to leave if she didn't show up within good time – but she made her audience wait and after a whopping 30 minutes before making an appearance on stage and was greeted by boos.

Lana grovelled to festival-goers as she appeared on stage: "I'm so f**king late that I am about to rush this set today.

"If they cut power, they cut power. I'm super f**king sorry, my hair takes so long to do. I love you all. Let's keep on running the set as it's supposed to go."

Midway through the set Lana was filmed having her hair done after she admitted her hair was the cause of her tardiness.

The Summertime Sadness songstress was seen sitting on a chair in between tunes as a stylist came onto the stage to change her locks as she continued to perform.

Cut off and brutal dig

As the clock stroked midnight, Lana's mic was cut off.

The image of Lana on the big screen was then replaced with an advert for the festivals Arcadia stage popped up as Skepta B2B Jammer's performance began in a brutal dig.

Despite losing power, Lana was seen pleading with a someone at the side of the stage – perhaps asking for power to be restored.

Despite Glastonbury's strict curfew on the big stages Lana refused to leave and kept the audience entertained as she began to sing her hit Video Games with the crowd at The Other Stage joining in.

However, some fans couldn't help but feel disappointed as one told the Mirror: "It was beyond a joke. She had a headline set and ruined it by being late. I’m gutted we didn’t get to hear her full setlist."

Meeting fans before being escorted by security

The singer took it upon herself to do a spontaneous meet and greet with fans at the front of the crowd, shaking hands and taking selfies.

She was praised by some on Twitter as one wrote: "Shame on Glastonbury for cutting off #LanaDelRey when others were still playing elsewhere. No word, no warning, no respect? The GRACE of her going down to meet fans and sing along, I can't. I'm so gutted for her and the crowd. This should have been more."

"The fact she feels so bad and got the crowd to sing and then went out to meet fans despite her mic being cut off [cute face emoji] #LanaDelRey," another said.

One moment saw her singing Summertime Sadness with those at the front of the crowd.
The spontaneous meet and greet was soon interrupted by security and she was filmed being escorted from in front of the crowd by security as her audience cried and screamed with some disappointed boos mixed in too.

BBC 'snub'

Like every headline act playing at Glastonbury, Lana Del Rey fans were expecting to watch her eventful appearance on BBC iPlayer after it was broadcast live.

But, Lana's gig is yet to appear on the channels catch-up stream.

Fans are now wondering if the move is a snub from the BBC following her late appearance as she is the only headliner this year to not have her performance available on the iPlayer.

One urged: "Bbc iplayer where her set? You best put it on! #lanadelrey @BBCiPlayer".

"Lana Del Rey on the naughty step by any chance? 30 minutes late and then escorted offstage at midnight due to the curfew. Now BBC iplayer appear to have airbrushed her out of the festival. Can YOU find her?," another pointed out.

A third wrote: "Is it just mine or is Lana Del Rey coverage not available on the BBC iplayer? I’m on headliners and she is not there".

"there’s no way bbc iplayer has worked for every single performance so far at Glasto but suddenly doesn’t work for Lana Del Rey??? surely not,"another quizzed.

They put one song in there now. One song?!?!?

From what I saw of it on tv last night, wasn't very impressed tbh. Seemed like the backing singers were doing most of the work while she fluffed about a bit in a little dress. Went back to watching slash having a 2hr boring guitar wank.

i read about Lewis Capaldi got a bit teary then had a full on cry when I watched him. Hope he can have a rest & have some peace now.

I watched Lizzo with my partner who I invited to come with when I saw her in March & he declined but regrets it now.

Looking forward to Elton later.

She's not a dancing performer. She sings. She was the only act I really wanted to see :(

It's ok, found this for the meantime

I did think that, along with "Well who invited them ?". Not terribly appropriate really. They did a flyover at Tankfest but I think that was perfectly appropriate.

There is a Scottish festival where the times I’ve been, on the Friday, what looked like every plane heading from RAF Lossiemouth to the Cape Wrath bombing range buzzed the site at fairly low level. I guess something like this livens-up a pilots day?

LDR can fuck right off. She had an hour and a half headline slot on one of the biggest stages in the world, something that acts would give anything for, then is half an hour late because… hair? Sort your priorities out ffs. Nobody gives a fuck about your hair, get on stage and do your job.

And of course she got cut off. The festival license - and associated fines for breaching noise limits - are considerably bigger than she is.

I honestly thought that the hair thing was part of the show. Agreed. She's got a great voice and I love the stuff she did with Bobby Womack but that performance seemed half arsed and drab tbh. Especially like you say, one of the biggest slots. The other singers put more work in for sure and the camera angles seemed to be more about upskirt panty shots than the performance.
