Frankie Boyle funds Guantanamo prisoner's suit against MI6 for defamation

I don't know how to feel about this man. On the one hand he seems the worst kind of insulting comic cunt, but on the other hand, his politics are generally in the right place (non-PC language aside).

He's donating his money from the libel case he won to the sole remaining Briton in Gitmo to sue MI6. Here's the story.

Firstly, good on him. But how would this work? I thought MI6 doesn't officially exist, whatever that means. Some nice doublethink we've all learned to cope with. Actually, am I imagining this or did they suddenly stop being secret a few years ago and now they're acknowledged...kinda? :hmm:

Will this be the first use of secret courts if it goes ahead?

The bolded bit, I guess it just shows that people aren't one-dimensional. It's nice and comfortable to be able to put people in a handy category of 'cunt' or 'not cunt' but sometimes I suppose it's not that easy. Whenever I see him on telly I want to punch his smug fucking face, and I'd never willingly put myself through one of his routines or watch him purposefully on a comedy show or whatever, because I know I'd get really angry. Sometimes people retweet stuff he says on twitter and I start gritting my teeth and come over all unnecessary. Other times people will retweet what he says and I find myself thinking he's absolutely spot on. It's really frustrating feeling split like that. I want to just file him away in my 'massive cunt, want him to go away forever' box, but I can't. And I fucking hate him for that. Cunt.

Most interesting. It would be a wonderful piss-take to see libel laws being used against supposedly extra-judicial state actions like this.

Good on him indeed.

I see from the blog:

A Foreign Office spokesperson said they could not comment on any on-going legal proceedings but Reprieve claim that they have already seen a response from Government lawyers claiming the security services are protected by legal privilege.

“The claim they would make is they would have law enforcement privilege,” said Stafford-Smith. “But our response to that is they’re not enforcing any law because Shaker has not broken any law, he’s not been prosecuted for breaking any law and they’re not investigating him for breaking any law. So our position is they would have no such privilege.”

A euphemism for 'we can do what the fuck we like'. I do so hope the courts disagree.

Hence why it's called a 'comic act'...he's invented a persona, based on his own but to grotesque proportions. A bit like Clarkson. They've worked out what works and how to push the buttons.
