I'm glad Rooney wasn't on. If he'd been on and been on the shitty end of one of those blind refereeing decisions, there would have been an almighty kick off and he'd have been sent off.

Not a bad first go. Better than I was expecting, any road.

Isn't it... one-all first game rising anticipation, we could do this...we're not that bad...ready for difficult second game..unlikely result...puts the pressure on...last game is critical...we blew it...never good enough...always bottle it...next time round...due for a good tournament..isn't it?

Longest French siege withstood since the fall of Calais, counts as a moral victory obviously.

I'm pleased with that. I thought we were going to be terrible but we held our own. I may stupidly allow myself a bit of cautious optimism.

There were some good performances there tonight. Gorbachev and Johnson put a great shift in at the back and both got forward to make an impact at the French end of the field..
Gerrard moved the ball around well even though he was playing in a more defensive midfield role.
AOC played well and will go from strength to strength.

The ref played a blinder for France.

It doesn't matter against a mediocre side like France though. They'll need to raise their game for the Sveds;)

Why is Milner even in the team? ashley young was nowhere to be seen today. should have got defoe on earlier.

To be expected, England were as frustrating to watch as ever.

I would say its 50/50 whether we get out of the group stage, all hinges on the Swedish games IMO.

England had a much bette game than I expected. France didn't havent much about them at all.

Galic flare my arse.

1-1 that'll do for starters.

England defended well, but they held their shape almost to a fault. Nobody in midfield looked remotely keen to press forward and create anything, Oxlade-Chamberlain seemed so afraid of moving into space I'd swear he was agorophobic. This would be fine if the opposition were beating on the door, but France were nothing special either and they could easily have been beaten tonight.

Johnson looked good, but he was obliged to do too much attacking to make up for the deeply average Milner and he was caught out of position once or twice. Lescott and Terry did well as well but I'd still be tempted to bring in Jagielka for Terry next time. Gerrard looked a shadow of his former self. Welbeck had his moments but he was mostly cut adrift from the rest of the team. Joe Hart was England's best player by some distance I reckon.

But yeah, could've been worse.

I thought the defence was really good, it was the nervous-schoolboy daddling and faffing with the ball, slow passing pace and fairly poor creativeness when attacking which made them come accross a bit average (not bad though).

They were better than I was expecting at points though. Oh, I managed to watch the match cos my class was delayed so sat about being paid to watch it. Boom.

Pretty decent stuff. 1st game - so both teams would be playing pretty cautiously - also the heat will have slowed things down.
England look like they know what they are doing for the first time in years. Hopefully they will steadiny improve and qualify. Cant see us getting past spain or italy in the q-finals though.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much England kept their shape given how little time Hodgson's had to prepare. Just watching Ukraine atm though and reckon we might struggle against them.

Ingerland got lucky getting a slightly off form France for the first game. Teh French do have quality and it did show sporadically. The dying moments seemd to indicate both sides were happy with the scoreline

one yellow card all season, pay attention.

The midfield is the main problem. They don't put any pressure on the ball aside from just in front of the penalty area, and it's this, rather than just the pass selection that means they cede possession fairly easily. If you're always winning it back on your 18-yard line, with 10 men behind the ball, there's not a lot you can do with it. When England actually got up the pitch they found there was a pretty gaping hole between France's midfield and defence.

Gerrard's starting position for Nasri's goal was fucking ridiculous. A centre midfielder has no business whatsoever being there if he's not tracking a midfielder's run.

You must be mad. Terry's positional play was outstanding - and I thought Gerrard was outstanding.

By England's standards, I thought they played well. Having the best goalie in the tournament helps too, mind.

My thoughts exactly. Gerrard defended well but created little in terms of forward momentum, something he used to provide in spades. Looking at the squad it's hard to see where Hodgson can turn to strengthen his midfield, but hopefully he'll have realised that Ashley Young is never going to be much use in front of a flat four midfield. England looked a lot brighter once he was shifted back to the wing. Walcott should come in for Milner as well. I still think the absence of Barry and Lampard will cost us dear.
