The royal family are the figureheads of a system that creates and maintains poverty. It's a grotesque spectacle.I think it is awesome you recognized your classmate. Always nice to see what people do after the schooling is over.
Most of the problems facing families is world wide. Hunger, housing, crime, etc.
If, by visiting, she is raising awareness of the problem/organization and showing the average citizen what goes on behind the scenes, then job well done.

Why did she take the children? I used to do a lot of volunteer work and I always took my children. As a youth leader, I took youth groups to community organizations. I think it teaches compassion and empathy. I think it is important to let children learn about safety nets.
That and children are cute. My meals-on-wheels recipients loved seeing the little ones.
