I think it looks like a Francis Bacon painting.

Hideous and abstract.

How can a portrait be abstract?

Abstract in the form of non-representational maybe. Which could be applied to Francis Bacon's portraits I suppose though he, I gather, didn't like abstract art.

I would rather see a Francis Bacon version tbh. It would be far, far better than the painting in question (imo!)

I agree. I don't think the portrait is anything like a Bacon portrait because he was a brilliant portraitist.

I know sod all about art but I think it's crap.

It reminds me of one of those photography deals women go for where they get all glammed up and have their pictures taken by a professional photographer who makes them look way older than they are and then adds a glamour glow to them

Well, it would have been charming...but while Paul Emsley's portrait is a bad likeness, and poor art, it is skilled.
