Far right tropes: how to spot if your friend is going down the rabbit hole & how to respond

I initially read this is a joke and thought I don’t get it. :D

I think it’s just a variation on arrested and jailed for hurty words. Whilst those who beat up female police officers are still free. The Manchester Airport thing. This is where I see that type of comment on social media
Are people really arrested that often for 'hurty words'? The police would never have any time to do anything else if that was the case.

This was in the context of him thinking the UK under Labour is becoming a police state so I'm just wondering about it? Like what was the context? :D

Not only hurrty words but people get arrested just for flying the Union Jack and then the council give their house to immigrants just off the boat who also get given a giant telly. You couldn’t make it up…

Back in the day the old bill could arrest people for telling the cop to fuck off or similar levels of abuse if that person had been warned not to do it immediately before (S5 public order act) Then an appeal court judge, probably quite rightly, said the bar for insulting the old bill was much much higher than for members of the public.
People were often done for "Obstruction", which is not obstruction of the highway, but obstruction of the police in the course of their duty. I don't know if this law has been revised, but certainly at one time it applied to almost anything you might do. There was a case in which the police were going to search a building, looking for a man, and someone who said words to the effect "you won't find him in there", was found guilty of obstruction.

I've had a builder working for me recently who's a covid denier, doesn't believe climate change exists and thinks Bill Gates and Al Gore are trying to take over the world. He's also very religious (born again Christian, I think) won't watch TV and isn't on any kind of social media so I don't know where he gets his ideas from.

Trouble is, he's also a bloody good builder who does a good job for a fair price so I just have to put up with this shit as builders like him are like gold dust round here.

From where does he get his ideas about God?
I suspect that he gets his ideas about the other things from the same source.

By the way, the lovely George Galloway talks of men of fighting age. And he advocated the British navy being deployed to stop people crossing the Channel in small boats.

Cunt’s got to cunt…

It's a handy win-every-argument claim (in the mind of the person making it), because whoever plays the card can bend its meaning into whatever they want it to be, often in contradictory ways simultaneously

Indeed. It´s the same as the usefulness of the "woke" epithet as an insult. It has become so meaningless as a trope, that its meaninglessness has become an advantage to the bigot tendency. Because it means nothing, they can twist it to mean anything they (don´t) like.

This horrible paper had some circulation before (i think) stopping.

The print publication regularly makes conspiratorial claims surrounding Bill Gates and world leaders, promotes climate change denial and claims vaccines are weaponized mind control devices.[1][22]

It has called for modern-day Nuremberg trials for journalists, politicians and doctors and repeatedly referenced conspiracy theories concerning Agenda 21 and the Great Reset. It regularly criticised the COVID-19 restrictions in the United Kingdom by comparing vaccination efforts to Nazi extermination camps.[1][11][23] The paper was also found to have spread false claims concerning vaccines, COVID-19 and COVID-19 death figures.[24][25][26][27]

They´re "men of fighting age" when they are too "cowardly" to fight in their own countries; they become "men of working age" when they start to "steal our jobs".

Yes on reflection that trope began during the Syrian civil war if I'm not mistaken. Not genuine refugees, not deserving of sympathy etc. and everything else everyone has said on this thread.

This is almost a direct quote from my DM-reading mother. "You´re not allowed to say anything these days" is one of her regular refrains, but she comes up quite short when asked for a credible example.
