Ocon set for pitlane start at US GP following engine change

Alpine's Esteban Ocon will start Sunday's US Grand Prix from the pitlane, while a gearbox change for Yuki Tsunoda will set the AlphaTauri driver back five places on the starting grid. Ocon qualified a disappointing P18 on Saturday, which encouraged Alpine to strategically add a fresh engine, energy store and control electronics to the Frenchman's pool of hardware, theoretically putting him out of harm's way in terms of engine elements until the end of the season.

While the changes warranted a back-of-the-grid start for the Frenchman, Alpine forgot to seek the approval of the FIA, an oversight that equates to a pitlane launch for Ocon. Tsunoda's new gearbox implies a five-spot demotion for the Japanese charger, who is the sixth driver to receive a grid penalty this weekend. Ahead of Sunday's bulletin by the FIA describing the changes, Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso and Zhou Guanyu were hit with grid penalties.

Here is the final starting grid for Sunday's United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.

Should Verstappen have been eliminated in Q1 at the US Grand Prix?

Slowed down frame-by-frame, the video suggests the Dutchman had all four wheels over the white line on the exit of turn 12, a track limits infringement that usually renders a lap invalid. With Verstappen having only set one lap in the first part of qualifying, many fans have taken to social media to question why he won’t be starting the race from the back row.

The two-time world champion’s apparent infringement also happened at the same corner as Zhou Guanyu’s, though the latter had his time deleted in Q2, causing him to miss out on Q3. However, with there still being a significant amount of animosity between Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen fans online, it’s always worth taking claims about either with a pinch of salt. No doubt, the issue of track limits has continually raised its head throughout the season, and remains a grey area that the FIA needs to get on top of. But with closer inspection, the latest track limits debate appears to have been overblown.
