Eurovision 2023 - Liverpool

bigger than Moldova, about the same as Norway and Finland. It lost cos it was a shit song.
ah yeah...

But we haven't gotten into a final in years and not all songs were shit.

I may be wrong but...my understanding was that only the countries performing on the night could vote. So lets face it... UK wasn't performing last night. We would have picked up a good few UK votes had we been in the same semi final as them.

The Irish song was poorly performed. The singer wasn't one bit confident on stage. He started shaky and didn't improve.
The outfit did not suit him and looked crappy.
It was not a winning performance and they didnt deserve to go through.
Thw song itself could have done better with a stronger singer and much better choreography.

I was under the impression Ireland was just continuing their policy of never wanting to host EV again, enforced through selection of really shit songs.
I mean, they even brought the turkey back last night to remind us!

Yes..you have a fair point.
It very nearly bankrupt the country in the past.
I've a feeling that young people have zero interest in it here.
Whereas when I was young you knew the summer holidays were on the way because the Eurovision was on. It was marked on the calendar!!

Now...barely any real interest

Don't recall the country being bankrupted over it, but do remember the excitement when Johnny Logan won in 1980. Became a bit of a fan (of the competition) since, culminating in a backstage pass for work the year Katrina and the Waves won.

In later years kind of lost interest. Maybe it's just a getting older thing. Or maybe got jaded hearing angry people losing their shit about the amount of countries taking part.

We obviously don't get the show over here, we do get a weird music variety show every NYE, showcasing artists from yesteryear and today, which kind of makes up for it. It's truly dreadful but hypnotic.

Good to see Frankie back together, if only for one number......welcome

Might get a film

Gonna save myself for the final, I think.

From the first semi it really looks like all the most entertaining acts went through, so I completely get that.

Some previous years I missed some really good acts apparently by my refusal to watch the semis and ended up yawning through a load of worthy ballads in the final (2022 I am looking at you)

Sometimes the interesting acts don't even deserve to get through, so it's I guess a good thing that they don't. But they still really need to be seen. I'd put the aforementioned turkey in that list, pure WTF-ery.

Surely only the interesting acts deserve to get through and the uninteresting ones don’t?

Dustin? He's a gas fella!

It is, at its heart, a song contest and is intended (no matter what some fans think) to be taken seriously. There are a lot of "WTF did I just watch?" acts that don't get through because they're shit songs, but either they're so shit, or their presentation so wild that they still need to be seen.

it’s not though, is it? People watch it to be entertained by the WTF factor, not the X factor

Taking it as just a WTF contest is how the UK only sent dross for so long. It's probably more credible as a collection of radio -ready songs than it's ever been.

Then why do they carry on making novelty songs and perform in ridiculous costumes for the most part? Eurovision’s whole brand is novelty and camp.

Same here.

We have this weird tradition of having a Rustlers burger on the night. It's the only 1 time a year we do.

We just go full on snack food banquet, might get myself a rustlers, thanks for the tip! OH is eyeing up some halloumi fries. We also want spring rolls cos we like spring rolls.
It's the one time a year we splurge more than we can afford on snackage, cos neither of us want to be in the kitchen for the duration.

It's one consequence of televoting, you need to grab the viewers' attention at home.

Croatia this year is a very serious satire, they just choose to dress up to bring attention to their act. Finland 's entry is about relying on alcohol to combat social anxiety, he just chooses to involve a lot of bells and whistles.
