Great result for the lads

Southgate is a master tactician and those players delivered in every respect.
Is that the Southagte who said this morning that it wasn't in his nature to send out a team to lose a game? he's obviously an incredibly good liar, or England are shit!

I'll have you know I played for the same football team as Gareth Bale. And yes, this is an ACTUAL FACT.
Whitchurch High I'm guessing. Did you play rugby too? you could claim to have played for same team as Warbs!

At least the first team were rested after playing in rather warm conditions on Sunday. Tonight was shite but it was two B teams & I rather suspect they both wanted to come second.

We will see on Tuesday but it will certainly have to be an improvement on tonight.

Blatantly 100% fibbing. He was happy to lose and rest the squad... As simple as that. It wouldn't be sportsman like to say that out loud as a manager.
Proper tournament football managing...I'm impressed he didn't bow to the pressure to do otherwise. He's gone up in my estimation

He didn't rest half the squad, and if he sent them out to lose (as a draw would have seen us through as winners) he's sent players in need of confidence out to die.

Not sure that's great tournament management :hmm:

(I reserve the right to change my mind about this later on, but currently I'm yet to be convinced :p )

obviously a goalkeeper does not want to look shite so it not going to let one in but the outfield play that I saw (& I could not be that bothered to watch a dead rubber so did not watch it all) seemed from both sides to be happy to not win. That is why I decided to return to my book. They can't make it too obvious but that was the impression I got & is so it was a successful evening.

All the best teams at the tournament so far have drawn or lost a match.

Janusaj probably got a clip round the ear when he went back to the dressing room.

It's not about the result, it's about the attitude and the affect it will have.
What effect? You mentioned the players need confidence building. Do they? I think they're just fine, all the better for playing the next match in a less oppressive heat, knowing the road to the final is that bit more travellable, and with that bit more energy in the bank.

Again, you seem to be talking about the first XI, but what about the guys that were on the pitch tonight? What 'experience' did they gain? There were certainly a few there who seemed hesitant and uncertain, and collectively they looked pretty devoid of ideas and invention. Aside from a couple of neat exchanges everything was pretty pedestrian, predictable and linear.

So, either that's because that collection of players aren't up to snuff, in which case, how does that being exposed help them, or they were sent out to intentionally play poorly, in which case, how does that help them?

What happens when one of our first XI is injured and one of the guys who played tonight is thrown on? Will they be ready to prove themselves, or will they be nervous, following a lackluster and toothless display that did little to inspire?

All questions, because I really don't know how I feel, but right now I can't see all this as a positive, and I've yet to be convinced by most of the arguments put forward.

I thought there were some positives to take from the game. Rose impressed, the link up play between Vardy and Rashford made openings, RLC got us in good positions.
It's impossible to see the value of these individual inputs without knowing the full set up.

I get the impression that Southgate has plenty of formations to use for the KO games. Why on earth would he want show-case them in this meaningless fixture?
