earliest use of baseball bats as weapons?

The modern baseball bat was invented in 1884, so I'm going to go with 1884.

e2a: although baseball itself was invented in 1839 and presumably they were using a baseball bat of some description so I'm revising my estimate to 1839.

Wikipedia on baseball bats:
"In the mid-19th century, baseball batters were known to shape or whittle their own bats by hand. This allowed there to be a wide variety in shape, size, and weight. For example, there were flat bats, round bats, short bats, and fat bats. Earlier bats were known to be much heavier and larger than today's regulated ones. During the 19th century, many shapes were experimented with, as well as handle designs.

So it sounds like a more fitting question would be "When was the earliest use of weapons as baseball bats?"

It was called baseball (and earlier “bass-ball”) well before 1845.

first American references are from the late 18th c.

My brother hit Piers Morgan with a cricket bat. Not strictly relevant but I wanted to share.

Weapon of choice. Good to some people still doing things properly, as is will not be long before the Americans start claiming they invented the coffee shop and maybe even the sandwich.
