Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

What? You think so you think others think?

Sport btw is the most integrated thing in the US - it's the reality of capital being colour blind.

Just what the fuck was that post?

You haven't a clue about professional sport in the US then! Integrated? Colour blind? My fat ass. Look at the top of each sport and see what you see. Look at the response Black sportsmen and women got to refusing to put hand on heart during the national anthem in recent months.

Donald Trump appearing at the Emmys:

Christ, where did you find that?

One of my favourite shows when I was little. Druckers store was spookily like the one we had in the village. Arnold Ziffle was the best character of all. I'd still like to have a son like Arnold Ziffle!

Will be completely lost on most folk here. :D

There might be a lot of black professional sports players in the US; a more relevant question might be how many of the season ticket holders and box owners at the stadiums are black.

We used to visit relatives who lived close to a General Store that was a lot like Mr. Drucker's. In fact, there were a lot of people around who were reminiscent of the denizens of Hooterville.

I expect all people who identify as artists be snobby high handed hand fed buffoons who think as whole the massive neo-liberal concern they're involved in producing and selling is better than other peoples consumption of anything else. Now cut my lawn.

I understood what Tom meant. In high school, you got different cliques - the jocks, the grits, the nerds, the artists. They all tended to stay in their own lanes, and in small towns, that tends to carry on into adulthood. My brother played football in high school, still socialises with former jocks, likes watching football. My sister was a nerd, became a teacher, still friendly with nerds from school and college, prefers documentaries. You get the idea.

Who were you mates with?

It's no surprise Meryl Streep is being denounced as an out-of-touch Hollywood elite, she went to Yale and has been a movie star for 40 years, out-of-touch Hollywood elites is about the only constituency she could realistically represent. She's probably spent as much time socialising with MMA fans as she has with Masai tribesmen or Taiwanese fishermen.

But she's still right when she calls out Donald Trump for being a colossal prick, and the worrying thing is that even 10 days from becoming president, he still feels the need to respond on Twitter to her.

It doesn't bode well for what will happen when the North Korean propaganda writers who called John Kerry a "hideous, lantern-jawed wolf," George W. Bush a "hooligan bereft of any personality as a human being," and Hillary Clinton a "funny lady" who "looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping" start attacking Trump. though I will definitely be interested in seeing what they come up with - "Bewigged caricature of a capitalist?"

That some people are genetically racist and need pepping up from outside? Are you even listening to yourself anymore?

much like the earlier thing you posted from that tech CEO about rural hickshire getting fibre broadband and stop being racist. There must be scales inbetween somewhere, because all I am seeing is an expresion of a profound disconnect between classes here, not that they don't care or didn't care but that they never knew, didn't care to know about a US blue and lower white collar class being systemically hollowed out, and yes- left behind. I recall post 2008 the spectre of hoovervilles being raised but not much came of it to my attention- because people are living out of cars and living in abandoned portions of cities I presume (read some vox pops with people doing two jobs and living out of a knackered motor etc.)

I can't claim to know america outside of its pop culture and music, and in a limited way some of its people. But there it is, my thoughts.
I know I've posted it before, but seriously, this article imo is one of the best for getting to the nub of the problem with rural communities in "flyover country" like where I grew up.

I had a look at Streep's house on one of them celeb sites and fucking hell it looks like Troy McClure's. All that cash and not a smidgen of taste. :(

Carry on.

The blackest city with an NFL team I could think of was Jacksonville, anybody who's spent a lot time looking for Waldo might be able to tell if many black fans are in the crowd.

Though there is also Detroit:

Streep used her popularity and platform at the Golden Globes to criticise the President-to-be's mocking of a disabled man for defending himself against one of Trump's many lies. If you recall, Trump cited an article by Serge Kovaleski as evidence that "thousands of Muslims in New Jersey cheered on 9/11. The reporter stated the article didn't say that, earning him Trump's ire.

The point Streep made was that actors act, but Trump wasn't acting. He was videoed publicly mocking Kovaleski's disability (but denied later that was what he was doing :hmm:) He constantly belittles people he sees as weaker than himself, and people who don't agree with him. Streep used her privileged position to speak out because she has far less to lose than say, a union leader or a teenage college student who criticises Trump.

Not surprisingly, right wing fans of Trump have been over social media like a rash, dissing Streep's speech and ignoring her point on Trump's mocking of Kovaleski's disability (or are actually excusing his mocking).

Well Glory be, I'm reading the same shit on Urban. Hip Hooray for the Horsehoe.

Or, perhaps Kellyanne Conway has persuaded dear Urbanz not to worry about things Trump says, with her, "You always want to go by what’s come out of his mouth rather than look at what’s in his heart.”

So, we now have a US President elect who's said and done a long list of vile things (even a couple of which would have disqualified any previous candidate for the post) no one raises an eyebrow about anymore. He's surrounded himself with like-minded uber-rich advisors (including his own children) and is planning to dismantle anything stamped with the previous administration, regardless of the financial or human cost. He's not held a press conference in nearly 6 months, leaving the world to hang on his random Twitter pronouncements and "messaging" from his team as to what the future holds for the world. It's like a king issuing proclamations from his palace (and the bastard hasn't even taken office), and that's just hunky dory with alot of folk here.

Has everyone forgot this wasn't even in the ballpark of "normal" this time last year? And, the worst is fucking yet to come. :(

The others that are bashing Streep are our friends at.....FOX News and the rest of the right wing media.

Whey, too wrongs don't make a right, but it's hard not rejoice in seeing the US ' hoist on it own pertard' given what they are responsible for, but the 'hoister ' in this case certainly hasn't a clean pair of hands!
It's a precarious situation,in that the Orange buffoon is creating a rift between the US intelligence services and the more right wing of his party.
I get what you mean. I've hardly been a supporter of US policy, and chose to emigrate, which is something people where I come from do not do. They rarely move to the next state, let alone across the world.

But, the impact of what will happen in the US isn't going to be confined to the Americans you or I don't like. It could take the whole damned world down with it. :(

I think maomao and others are suggesting that people like MS got their wealth from an industry that bullies the poor. So when a rich celeb criticises an even richer person for being a bully that's not even ironic, that's sinister. And that maybe she should just stick to acting.
To be fair, are there any industries where the rich get there by NOT bullying/exploiting poor people in some way? Trump and his entourage most certainly got rich by exploiting the poor and they are quite outspoken, one might suggest even proud of what they've done.

The Guardian got it right:

Trump has been quick to respond, denying accusations he was mocking the disabled reporter – New York Times journalist Serge Kovaleski – and reminding the public that Streep, “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood”, introduced Hillary Clinton at her convention and that “a lot of these people supported Hillary”. He wasn’t surprised, he said, he was being attacked by “liberal movie people”. And sure enough, his defenders scrambled to the social media fronts to boo and hiss liberal Hollywood.

Seems it's possible to find Trump supporters in the oddest places.

Think about all the gardners, housekeepers, drivers working for the people like MS. If you just took her as an example, how much money does she make per movie? $10 - 20mln? And what do her gardner, housekeeper, and driver make? Do you honestly think it's great or just to live in a society where income dustributon is so skewed that some people have to practically slave their whole lives away and the celebs they work for are happy to collect their paychecks and do absolutely nothing to share their wealth?

Also, I am afraid, Moore is no longer relevant, prior to the election he went on a tour of the Midwest during which he compared the Trump supporters to the dying dinosaurs. They are not so dead now are they?
I wish they were dying.
I lost a lot of respect for Moore when he came out for Ralph Nader as a 3rd party candidate in 2000. He took just enough votes to give 8 years of GWB. :(

It's horrible. In the 80s J there were people who believed anything out of the ciA was a lie. in the ussr they felt the same as regards the job. These idiots are now asking us to trust them. But I lived in the US 4 decades ago... I def
Know that voting machines were hacked.

Which of the things would have disqualified him from being president?
If I have to tell you, it probably means you don't think Trump has done anything that's very bad.

You can look up previous presidential candidates that pulled out of the race as a comparison. Try Ed Muskie, Gary Hart and Joe Biden for starters.

To be honest, I don't mind the fact that he rants away on twitter and responds to attacks on him just as you or I would do. Admittedly, the reason he can't stop himself blasting away on twitter is that he's a sociopathic narcissist, but to suggest he shouldn't do that is to buy into the notion that presidents should be lofty and 'presidential'. The fact that he's a gobshite with a short fuse pales into insignificance when it comes to his racism and plans to screw the poor.

Thanks for the memories! You mean there aren't Hooterville equivalents in Canada! ;)

I have no idea what you are talking about. "Genetically racist?" WTF pal. Doesn't mean people can't be socialised to be racist, or was apartheid South Africa just one big multicultural holiday camp?

A lot of them are dying, and they also seem quite aware of the satisfaction that gives certain factions in the US . Bush was elected by democrats who preffered his brand of fuckwittery over the other slightly different brand . And I honestly fail to see what difference that actually made to the world . The democrats would have invaded Iraq just as certainly as him .the Clinton administration spent 8 years destroying the place and killed around a million of its people before Bush showed up, with Blairs help . They were every bit as cruel and genocidal and fully supported Bushes crimes .
The only difference it would have made is you'd be defending the Iraq invasion today and making excuses for it . Calling it a well intentioned deed gone sadly wrong, like Libya . Out of innate political tribalism .

while this is a point, mouthing off on twitter is not the harmless 'I hope ur mum gets aids!!' anonymity of the old days of internets. His three am mouthings off will have consequences, because the medium is taken seriously. Of course we don't want to talk about the 'dignity of office' etc because we hold such office in contempt regardless but in terms of what impact it has...just winding people up at 3 am on the twitter machine. Its not looking good is it.*

*its funny when PD used to do it

You have to tell me. You said it. Back it up.

That's a disgusting post. Btw

Also, I am afraid, Moore is no longer relevant, prior to the election he went on a tour of the Midwest during which he compared the Trump supporters to the dying dinosaurs. They are not so dead now are they?

Moore did compare Trump supporters to dying dinosaurs, while taking the piss out of people who had a problem with there being a woman president. From the transcript: "There are going to be internment camps for men. And Hillary will have all her, you know, Wellesley students there with their clipboards checking us in to the internment camp. They’ve got to—they’ve got to pick out a few to keep the species going....

....Who are they going to pick? The smart ones and the good-looking ones. So, all right, already I’m looking at the faces of the guys here. They already know they’re in the camp. We’re all in line. We’re going to be in line there ... And that’s why they’re so upset. You’ve seen them at the rallies, right? These guys at the Trump rallies? They’re like, "Raaaaah! Raaaaah! Aaaaaaaagh!" It’s the sound of the dying dinosaur. "Ooooaaaaaah! Oooooooh!"

But he went on to describe Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin as the "Brexit states" and say: "I am around a lot of people who are planning to vote for Donald Trump. And a lot of people I grew up with, who are—you know, a lot of them are guys and women, like me, who are of this age, and they—you know, they’re angry. And they’re angry for justifiable reasons, because they went and got jobs in the auto factories, and they lost those jobs, and now, you know, if they’ve been able to get another job, they’re working for a lot less money. Some of them are working two or three jobs. And they’re really, really angry at the system. And they see Trump as their human Molotov cocktail, where they get to—you know, they get to go in the voting booth next Tuesday and just go beep, you know, just whip him right into the system, because he has told them, in his own words, he’s going to blow it up."

So I have a lot more respect for Michael Moore since he managed to predict exactly where and how Trump was going to win while the media and the Clinton campaign, etc. had their heads in the sand.
