Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

I think that you are right, and in a way that makes it even worse.
much like the earlier thing you posted from that tech CEO about rural hickshire getting fibre broadband and stop being racist. There must be scales inbetween somewhere, because all I am seeing is an expresion of a profound disconnect between classes here, not that they don't care or didn't care but that they never knew, didn't care to know about a US blue and lower white collar class being systemically hollowed out, and yes- left behind. I recall post 2008 the spectre of hoovervilles being raised but not much came of it to my attention- because people are living out of cars and living in abandoned portions of cities I presume (read some vox pops with people doing two jobs and living out of a knackered motor etc.)

I can't claim to know america outside of its pop culture and music, and in a limited way some of its people. But there it is, my thoughts.

... nevertheless, Donald is part of the Hollywood elite:

This is how some people in the US have been living (or not):

Family living in U-Haul loses baby, then two older kids

(The night this happened the actual temperature got down to -8F.)

I don't think either party has really addressed the dilemma of being too poor to pay rent because jobs pay almost nothing. Or, the awful decisions they have to make to cope with that.

or indeed the greed of slumlords- recall vaguely reading about the imposition of rent controls in new york back when and you had these scummy bastards torching the flats for insurance money rather than accept that

Kellyanne Conway wants people to look into Donald Trump’s “heart,” not “what’s come out of his mouth”

Kellyanne Conway, the incoming White House counsel to President-elect Donald Trump, declared on Monday morning that the media should cover what’s in her boss’s “heart” rather than what he actually says.

While discussing Meryl Streep’s criticism of how Trump ridiculed a disabled reporter during his presidential campaign, Conway told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that “that is not what he did.” After Cuomo pointed out that there is video showing Trump specifically mimicking the mannerisms of someone afflicted with arthrogryposis — the neurological condition of reporter Serge Kovaleski, who was the target of Trump’s jab — Conway asked why Cuomo refused to give Trump the benefit of the doubt.

“Because he’s making a disgusting gesture on video about Serge,” Cuomo replied.

“Why don’t you believe him? Why isn’t it taken at face value?” Conway replied. “You can’t give him the benefit of the doubt on this and he’s telling you what was in his heart? You want to go with what’s come out of his mouth rather than what’s in his heart.”

What is in Donald's heart?

Streep on Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was a pioneer, willingly or unwillingly, for the role of women in politics.

It is hard to imagine a part of our current history that has not been affected by measures she put forward in the UK at the end of the 20th century. Her hard-nosed fiscal measures took a toll on the poor, and her hands-off approach to financial regulation led to great wealth for others.

There is an argument that her steadfast, almost emotional loyalty to the pound sterling has helped the UK weather the storms of European monetary uncertainty.

But to me she was a figure of awe for her personal strength and grit. To have come up, legitimately, through the ranks of the British political system, class-bound and gender-phobic as it was, in the time that she did and the way that she did, was a formidable achievement. To have won it, not because she inherited position as the daughter of a great man, or the widow of an important man, but by dint of her own striving. To have withstood the special hatred and ridicule, unprecedented in my opinion, levelled in our time at a public figure who was not a mass murderer; and to have managed to keep her convictions attached to fervent ideals and ideas – wrongheaded or misguided as we might see them now – without corruption – I see that as evidence of some kind of greatness, worthy for the argument of history to settle. To have given women and girls around the world reason to supplant fantasies of being princesses with a different dream: the real-life option of leading their nation; this was groundbreaking and admirable.

I was honoured to try to imagine her late life journey, after power; but I have only a glancing understanding of what her many struggles were, and how she managed to sail through to the other side. I wish to convey my respectful condolences to her family and many friends.
