Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

But surely not the first or the worst time a US president, or candidate has threatened or actually embarked on action that was against the wishes/interests of Russia / USSR. My life until my mid 20's was punctuated with plenty of face offs between the US and USSR, and there have been proxy conflicts more recently.

This wasnt a proxy conflict or a face off . It was war . How many presidents were shooting Russian planes out of the sky while bombing Russian manned air bases and defence batteries and sinking Russian destroyers ? Not to mention simultaneously attacking Syrian and Iranian forces on top of that . That's precisely what a "no fly zone" would entail . That lunatic and her fellow lunatics were embarking on a game of nuclear chicken in the belief Putin would blink first . They were gambling the former KGB man who walked out of his base alone when the Berlin wall was coming down and stood there with a gun facing down mobs would blink first and not respond . Utter idiocy . Lunacy . Fanaticism is the only way to describe it . Utter madness .

Trump will fuck things up in his own way but at least now there's a breathing space .

Words from a dying, sclerotic culture with no future to rural Ameirca

There was an American wife of a manager at the local multinational in Castlebar, who arrived there gung-ho to spread the word of white Xtian evangelical fundamentalism to the Irish hordes. She soon revised her agenda when one of the local housewifes said to her "so are you from the part of the United States where Martin Luther King was shot?"

There's a lot to this sort of thing that feels like Evangelical Christianity, isn't there? Similar personality types are attracted to it I think. Except there is no hope of redemption.

It's definitely a case of "my relative material wealth proves I am one of the Elect". Calvinism - not even once.

That was impressive the day after, but even more so after a couple of months.

I found this bit particularly on target, I also suspect it has relevance to the UK if you substitute a few proper nouns:

The American white-collar class just spent the year rallying around a super-competent professional (who really wasn’t all that competent) and either insulting or silencing everyone who didn’t accept their assessment. And then they lost. Maybe it’s time to consider whether there’s something about shrill self-righteousness, shouted from a position of high social status, that turns people away.

The even larger problem is that there is a kind of chronic complacency that has been rotting American liberalism for years, a hubris that tells Democrats they need do nothing different, they need deliver nothing really to anyone – except their friends on the Google jet and those nice people at Goldman. The rest of us are treated as though we have nowhere else to go and no role to play except to vote enthusiastically on the grounds that these Democrats are the “last thing standing” between us and the end of the world.

Flatly denying that Russia could have been involved is absurd, but to suggest that its likely only they could have been involved is as absurd.

After all we aren't talking about some bloke being poisoned with polonium here, or poisoned umbrellas, we are talking about someone gaining access to the emails of someone else.

Obama has clearly stated that such a hack can only have been ordered by Putin himself . That's plainly utter bollocks .

Manafort and Stone, Trump's political advisors, seem to have been involved with Russian efforts to roll-back US-sponsored regime change in the Ukraine. It's by no means implausible that they'd have acquired the contacts to hire some of the hacker organisations in question.

There doesn't seem to be any very obvious dividing line between criminal and commercial or state-aligned and state-run where these groups are concerned. At least not that any of the numerous public-domain security research organisations that have studied the hackers in question have ever been able to define.

I haven't noticed anything in the US govt statements about this which considers that (entirely plausible) scenario and explains why they've decided that didn't happen and instead (apparently) determined that: the DNC hack, a leak based on the hack and the influence operation based on the leak were all entirely Kremlin organised.

Trivial, I know, but pictures of this boxing glove seem to be very popular on the internets...

The devil is in the detail here.

The legerdemain with this statement is that it appears to say something it isn't. All it really says is that assuming this was the work of the Russian state, then it would have gone right to the top (not unreasonable).

Of course as presented it appears to suggest something much stronger, and it tacitly assumes the propaganda which is the desired selling point.

Meryl Streep criticised Trump during her Golden Globes acceptance speech for taking the piss out of the disabled journalist. The did it in a succinct and articulate manner.

Twitter attacks her being the elite, and Trump sends a tweet calling her the most overated actress.

The man is a fucking spiteful child, aside from all the other shit he's done - his total arseholeness and lack of professionalism on Twitter is breathtaking

Meryl Streep managed to sneak in a classist swipe during her anti-Trump stuff by attacking MMA and American Football. Perhaps showing why 'the resistance' to Trump can't come from famous millionaires who obviously do not like the majority of Americans.

"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."

bit rich to give it that one when last year hollywood graced us with the zenith of artistic merit. Who can forget such breathtaking works as Suasage party, Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad

Yes but, consuming bad things is bad and is done by bad people and consuming good things is good and shows that you are good
