I honestly think (and fear) that this election is no longer about politics. I mean obviously it is, because it’s an election, and because the personal is political; but it feels like something existential is being played out here.

I agree with you that large structural elements are being pushed and shoved around. When these earthworks are done the landscape it’s going to look different. Not just the political landscape but the social landscape too.

No, not directly. They can appoint justices that nudge the law their direction. Trump has appointed a majority of the court, and they have shown that they're willing to interpret the constitution out of existence.
