"Digital driving licence"

nobody needs to carry a driving licence. not even if you're driving.

but for various reasons you do need to be able to provide proof of identity at times.

what ID would that be? the UK has no national ID document scheme.
hence the driving licence has become a de facto ID card as the next best thing. more convenient than passport anyway.
Isn’t also the case that legislation relating to driving enables the OB to demand ID details without reason of suspected offence, unlike the general common law?

Didn't actually realise this from the BBC article:

In the European Union, every member state is required to introduce at least one form of digital ID by 2026. Are we following it to keep up, I thought we weren't 'in' the EU anymore?

It's a huge project, and each state's offer as to what the digital wallet will enable varies. Similarly, each state's technological capacity varies massively, as does digital literacy. France, the Nordic states, and some others will have something tangible to launch this year, but the others? The target is that the (EUDI) wallet will be available to 80% of EU citizens by 2030.

17 countries are supposed to be piloting EUDI for mobile driver’s licenses and 15 for accessing government services. The first pilots should be live this year with other states joining 2026.

Personal data, squeamish types might want to look away or get behind a settee as part of the project are pilots for identity proof for (SIM) card registration and activation that all EU states can access.

Here is what is expected state by state. ( Ukraine is also listed however their digital service application is also linked to a requirement to provide personal details for conscription )

This is very interesting just what is going on across Europe in terms of people having a digital 'wallet'.

Is technology necessarily always a good thing? I think it is when being used to combat crime, illegal immigration and other things. It feels like though sometimes now you have to jump through hoops just to exist and you're looked at on the same level as someone doing something wrong just incase. (Rather than the opposite way round, see a good person then tackle bad things if they happen).

Where I live, the idea of having a digital wallet in 2025 would make absolutely no sense to a good quarter, probably a third, of the local population.

if I understand your question correctly, then yes.
the cops can demand to see your driving licence but there's no requirement for you to have that on your person at the time while driving. it's acceptable to go to the station with it later.

Pretty much everyone who asked to see my I'd/ proof if address seems happy enough will the photo of either my passport / driving licence...might ask for a zoom to satisfy I look like me if doing on line..rarely

Well there's no requirement to carry ID, is there. So the most they can do is order you to provide it within 7 days (along with MOT and insurance details)
But as we all know, that's not "the most they" can try on; they will habitually demand to know who you are ie. your ID. Apparently, these days, the OB rarely issue producer notes as they can glean stuff from the PNC.
