Crafty Thread - what are you working on at the moment?

I have had grand-daughter with me for half-term and, following on from Boudicca's assistance with patterns, we have drafted her first pants block. Annoyingly, when we did the back, we didn't allow for the shape of the pants shifting to the right, so our pattern fell off the page and we had to do it again. I find technical drawing to be a pain and have a tendency to makw (wild) guesses...but doing it with a child (no short cuts, careful measuring) has been quite a joy. We are going to test it with a toile to sew as she is not keen to cut into the material she picked (Rico cactus print jersey).

O Very nice,Boudicca. I am impressed!. I am also supposed to be redoing curtains (and a nightmarish list of other things) in the horsebox. Back in some long ago past, I was very effortful regarding this sort of stuff. I swear I redid a room every coupla years...although with offspring and many assorted pets, it was sorely needed. Then, I transferred every single, vaguely creative impulse into horticulture. However, the garden and allotment are in the usual July doldrums, best ignored, so I have been in a fever of frustrated creativity. I don't get how I can wait literally years for some plant or another while my patience for sewing, knitting, painting, etc. is deeply lacking.

Have been unimpressed with natural dyeing. Pastels and murky earth tones are not what I am wanting in my yarn. Am thinking fuckit - will just buy some Procion acid dyes and overdye (although there are still bushels of bloody indigo plants to deal with.

Do post some pics of the camper - I seriously need enthusing...

I’m replacing the zip on a rucksack any hints from sewists gladly received. I made a bit of a dogs dinner of taking out the old zip but I have a matching new zip. I’m not going to be able to bias bind (?) it in so I’ll go for a rough finish, that doesn’t bother me if it’s functional.

Also going to try making candles out of old wax melts some time soon.

I’m after quite a deep eyelet/grommet if anyone knows where I can pick a couple up

I’ve some 4mm deep ones but it’s not enough to get through this.

I’m turning an old folder into a laptop case, it’s perfect size just no space for straps

This is probably the least worst place to ask a sort-of-crafty question: is there an easy way to get all of the wax out of an exhausted glass candle pot? They're good heavy containers with lids so I want to re-use them

In the past I've filled them with hot water and the wax has melted and risen to the top. When it's cool, you can pick it out easier.

dunno - you suggested pouring the wax into a glass jar but i want to put it into something i can’t reuse and can chuck in the bin, so glass is not an option

I suggested melting the wax in the glass jars in the oven.
Then pouring all the now melted wax from all jars into one small jar (to make a small candle of the left over wax) or you could pour it into a glass or somewhere else...
You could pour it on some brown paper and let it harden. Pick it off and throw it away.

Traditionally jam jars are warmed in the oven on the lowest setting to sterilise and warm them before filling with hot jam. You just have to go gently. Eg filling a cold jar with boiling water would probably crack it.

I do my jam jars at 150. I do pretty much everything at 150, including the engine casings for my helicopter engines when I'm fitting new bearings... I Iike 150 :D

I've bought a swimwear pattern - it would be great if I can nail making my own cossies. Only trouble is I need a whole list of small haberdashery items (two different widths of swimwear elastic and some swimwear lining fabric), none of which can be bought in the same place as far as I can tell, so I'm looking at paying separate postage on all of the fuckers. I guess home making swimwear is a niche hobby...

When I had a go at swimwear (with not much success) I bought Powernet and swimwear elastic from Fabricland. They specialise in dancewear stuff so have stretchy things at reasonable prices.

I also bought a rubbish coverstitch machine but it (or me) couldn't cope with two layers of fabric turned to the inside and going round a corner.
