care in the uk - a disgrace

I fear that hers is not an isolated case, just one that happened to make the press. It appears that it wasn't just her carers
that failed her but the wider care system including the hospital. No excuse, but she was not the easiest of patients to
deal with. In a similar vein is this Man dies of heart attack in Lidl car park during five hour ambulance wait
Normally for a heart attack, an ambulance will normally reach you within about 20 minutes, but 5 hours!

Just put this on the pissed off thread but it should probably be here too:

This: https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co...gGQ&utm_content=254432748&utm_source=hs_email

It has knocked the wind out of my sails somewhat - the care home in question was my mum’s and they neglected her medical needs until she landed in hospital. I’m certain it hastened her distressing downward spiral towards the end. She wasn’t medicated expeditiously enough for UTIs, which destroyed her already precarious mental health and was in and out of hospital after that, until she died in hospital of pneumonia.
I think that manager worked there after my mum died, but that place has had failing CQC reports since then (my mum’s experiences contributed to the first bad report) and the manager’s criminality is indicative of the culture of that establishment.

The sentence is a joke!! I can understand how you feel. I remember you saying how you used to bring your Mum Dahl which struck a note with me. As a veggie who loves good food I dread being stuck in a home eating the shit they serve. You did the best by her and that’s all you could do. Makes me so angry how badly these places are run.

Do people know about the Compassion in Care charity?

They have a helpline and support whistleblowers. I only heard about them quite recently. They are campaigning for 'Edna's law'. Will try to post links to them later.

Four "carers" have been found guilty of the ill-treatment of vulnerable people at Whorlton Hall, County Durham.

Jurors heard vulnerable patients were mocked and treated with "contempt".

The specialist hospital for people with complex needs, who required 24-hour-care, was privately run by Cygnet but funded by the NHS.

Panorama sent undercover reporter Olivia Davies to work shifts at the 17-bed unit for two months between December 2018 and February 2019.

Durham Constabulary subsequently launched an investigation and within two days of the programme going on air 10 carers were arrested.

Whorlton Hall: Four guilty of ill-treating patients

There's also an article on the BBC about how one woman was mistreated at Whorlton Hall, years after abuse at Winterbourne View was exposed:

I have heard many stories from the families of people with learning disabilities and autism about this failure in the provision of local services.

The secret BBC filming showed how staff reacted when Alex became increasingly upset.

Her family says the hospital team knew she was frightened of men. Yet when she was distressed, a senior care worker, Matthew Banner was seen sitting outside Alex's room threatening to call "five more men, six more men", unless she calmed down.

It was described to the BBC's undercover reporter as the "man button". Another senior care worker, Peter Bennett, boasted that he had invented it. He was also heard snapping balloons, which made a noise that increased Alex's upset.

Jackie O'Sullivan, [Mencap]'s director of communications, advocacy and activism, says the system is broken.

"We shouldn't be in a situation where, 12 years after Winterbourne View, this is still happening. Most of the people who were in Whorlton Hall shouldn't have been there in the first place."

I received a call from an 85 year old man the other night. My carers have gone and they told me to call because my wife is not responding! The minimum time the carers are with anyone is 15 minutes. This means that this woman was left like that for at least 15 minutes when they should have immediately call an ambulance. They will not have heard the last of this 😡

FFS, what on earth were they thinking not calling an ambulance, this is basic stuff.

How is the woman now?

There's also an article on the BBC about how one woman was mistreated at Whorlton Hall, years after abuse at Winterbourne View was exposed:

A review has found that multiple agencies were at fault over the abuse of vulnerable adults at Whorlton Hall.

A delayed safeguarding adults review has now described how failings by multiple agencies, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Durham County Council adult and health services and Durham police prevented the abuse being halted earlier.

Although the review only focused on a 16-month period between February 2018 and May 2019, concerns about standards at Whorlton Hall (pictured) were first uncovered by CQC in 2015.

The 87-page review is also critical of some of the health bodies and local authorities that had secured places at Whorlton Hall for disabled people from other parts of the country.

The review also points out a nationwide lack of adequate provision and safeguarding for people with learning difficulties in need of care.

It points to the need for disabled people in specialist hospital settings to have a named, independent professional with whom they can develop a “sustained relationship of trust”.

It also points to the “illusion of advocacy provision” for autistic people and those with learning difficulties who are inpatients in specialist mental health hospitals, which it says is “inadequate” and creates “a false security that advocacy is in place”.

And it says that the absence of national oversight of urgent hospital closures following care scandals means there is “little learning about what is working well and what needs to improve”.

It also criticises the lack of a “clear national approach” that will translate into “real change” for autistic people and those with learning difficulties in specialist hospitals.

On a board full of people terrified of going into camps, the only posters who’ve shared anything about whorlton hall are dystopiary and myself.

And whilst I’m grateful to DNS for writing this, I can’t ignore that he’s managed to write a a long article about whorlton hall and not make a single mention of people with a learning disability. This isn’t an accident, there’s been a concerted effort by the disability identitarians (who do not live in camps like WH) to keep people with a learning disability (and severely disabled people more generally) out of the discourse. Hence instead of ‘people with a learning disability and/or autistic people’ (which the safeguarding report itself accurately states), the DNS article writes ‘autistic people and those with learning difficulties’. It’s not a one off, and it’s not the fault of DNS, but it is part of the campaign by the less disabled to push their needs over and above those who are more disabled

Just heard a friend of ours has had stroke. He's out of hospital and in a dementia care home. He has no speech or occupational therapy there. He's surrounded by people much older than him who have severe dementia issues, and he is left in his room for 24 hours a day unless he has a visitor. It seems very cruel to be so isolated and without the appropriate care.

It does; same thing happened to my FiL and he went downhill as a result.
But rest assured the rate of return to the asset managers holding the 'senior residential' property will be maintained throughout their brief ownership of high charges & no investment until they're able to churn it on to another fund and mopping up the capital gains.

I mentioned on the other disability thread about dimensions (a care provider). The inquest for Sally Lewis (who died from faecal impaction due to neglect from Dimensions) finished recently. There’s information about it here

And more detailed information and analysis here

And here

The family had to pay for their own legal representation (the provider had a King’s Counsel to represent themselves, but they didn’t offer to fund her families legal rep). The crowd funder for their legal costs is here.

that wants a fuss making, the sooner the better.

my grandmother (mum-tat's mum) had a stroke when she was in her 80s and instead of any rehabilitation (which is what should happen after a stroke) was basically just parked somewhere.

she did get out again, but wasn't really the same after.

i don't know enough about how the system works in england to know the most effective way of getting something done about it, and the system in scotland (if that's where he is) may be different.

Stroke Association may be worth a look (by your, or his family) for info / support - they do have a phone line that's open office hours and saturday mornings.

Not sure if this is the right thread or not but a volunteer army of social care auxiliaries… feels a bit quiet batpeople to me

Fuck me, so spending time with people just talking, playing games, watching films, reading, doing activities or other meaningful interactions ... a job currently done by thousands of care staff on minimum wage .. well it's literally worthless. To be done for free. Rather than put a legal duty on providers to staff properly.

Fucking disgusting.

“It’s obscene and disgusting that someone like Margaret has her entire life savings wiped out, her home sold and family’s funds run dry in order to fund a life of luxury for these care home owners. The system feeds greed.”

“The even greater scandal is no one seems to care and there is zero action from anyone at a government level to end this exploitation of older citizens.”

My father is in this situation. Dementia means he cant understand this though.

The thing is that if he knew that the state would rob him in his old age he would have taken action during his life and avoided this through insurance or some such. He actually feels that he paid all his tax and national insurance his whole life to avoid this.

Its fuckin wrong
