Seems to have mixed up 'the rest of us' with 'pompous, joyless twats' there :hmm:

I can't imagine going into a comic film without having read a comic. Not the specific one for the film, but y'know any comic. It must be hard to see the appeal if you didn't watch your saturday morning comic cartoons, buy dc/vertigo stuff, enjoy the wtf of 90s comics being attempted edgy. It would look suspiciously like a bunch of twats in twat suits throwing each other into buildings

Billions of people are habitually going to see the Marvel films mate, it's easy to catch up.

I don't read superhero comics but I quite enjoy the Marvel and some of the other superhero films. Adaptations have to be able to work on their own terms and these generally do. And I don't get wound up by stuff like Aunt May not looking like a shriveled crone and somesuch. It's not exactly like the conventions of the genre are difficult to pick up on and that the concepts are completely abstract.

eh. thats true. I suppose people in china were not watching x-men cartoons back in the day with their cornflakes lol and its a massive market. Its not about like knowing whose who and that I mean the 'comic bookness' of things. Still I suppose its just another suspension of disbelief type thing- and we've had fntastical/horror films around since film began so maybe its no great stretch.

to be fair, that in essence is what it is
The fight scenes are the most boring bit about these films for me and if that's all they were I would have no interest in them. But the X-Men film have some interesting subtext to them and the Marvel films do this thing where they reinvent their plots as different genres, from space opera (Guardians of the Galaxy) to conspiracy thriller (Captain America 2) to mad scientist flick (Iron Man). And they employ talent like Joss Whedon and the guys who do the CA films who can write decent dialogue and who can make sense of the characters.

I love the fights :D I'd been looking forward to Scarlet Witch cos I wanted to see magic of the traditional kind. Possibly will pay for the Doctor Strange film at the cinema based on this.

I prefer them when they aren't epic and endless with lots of buildings tumbling. I think the best fight sequence in the entire Marvel series was the one in the lift in the second Captain America film.

i think youl find its the one in the hallway in daredevil season 1 or in the prison in season 2 :)

They maybe on TV but they are still cannon ;) if you havent seen the series, id go watch it asap

the hallway one is meant to be a homage to olboy's corridor fight scene. Of the two though, unarmed Punisher in jail was the more savage imo

Bucky and Cap vs special forces in the staircase was pretty fucking good tbf.

The thing about the airport fight is that, if you stick it on slightly slow-mo, it all lines up and each character colliding with each other in the background still ring true and show off their powers in clever ways.

Also the hits look like proper hits, it's astonishingly well choreographed, whether that's your thing or not.

Apparently almost entirely green screen too

Does this mean Robert Downey Junior and Don Cheadle can't really fly? :(

But yes that scene was very well done. On paper the two sides looked pretty unbalanced in favour of team Stark but they just made Scarlet Witch ridiculously powerful to make up for it. Giant Mike From Friends also helped of course.

So weird we remember his name in Friends :D

I love Paul Rudd but he's got no range

He doesn't get cast in roles which would allow him to show range. I think the last time he wasn't cast in a light comedy role, playing the amiable, funny guy was Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers

True, probably should have said he's not been in anything that demonstrates range.

He'd probably play a decent serial killer or predator if he got the chance, he's got that everyman look that can be twisted (like Ryan Reynolds in The Voices)

I agree with that, I can't even remember what happens at the end of Guardians or the last Avengers flick because it just turned in a big old battle which bored me senseless.....and I just switch off...and the 2nd Thor film, I've no idea how it ended..

I zoned out for the last half hour of The Avengers, till then I thought it was pretty good, with plenty of witty banter. Thor 2 is the only one of the Marvel Universe films which is complete rubbish.

Guardians I liked because although there was a bit of fighting on board the ship, a lot of it was spaceships and then the group holding the Infinity Stone, which had a great score and the emotional callback to Starlord's mother to accompany it.

Plus Groot happily slaughtering about a dozen or more soldiers and then looking like a happy puppy afterwards.

...and the 2nd Thor film, I've no idea how it ended..

Thor came up with a cunning plan to defeat his invincible enemy by...smashing him with a big hammer. And Loki somehow cheated death and is now pretending to be Anthony Hopkins back at Asgard HQ.

Don't look at me, I didn't write it.

But yeah it was a pretty dull film. Baddie who wants to turn everything dark because...generic bad guy reasons. Macguffin granting infinite power only in the movie to drag Natalie Portman into the plot and help set up the next Avengers movie. Loki has issues with his parents, all very moving.

didn't find Guardians of the Galaxy funny or entertaining and I'm a sucker for spaceships and swashbuckling heroes. Starlord. What a shit title. Few good rucks but by the end I didn't give a shit about the characters or thier motivations.

this means there will now be a GoG2,3 and 4 to spite me

The film did make a running joke of his name tbf.

And it looks like the guardians of the galaxy will be appearing in the avengers movies at some point so you've got that to look forward to I guess.
I'm looking forward to it v much  The Avengers haven't exactly met any actual aliens yet. Rocket will make Ironman have yet another breakdown.
