California wildfires are “historic”

$52 billion in insurance claims according to one insurance forecaster

I did wonder about insurance claims. C4 are currently doing a piece on this. Apparently some insurance companies will be unable to cover it and they themselves will go out of business. One firm has $37bn exposure there

There's going to be a lot of uninsured people. Over the last few years, a lot of companies have decided not to cover anything in California. State Farm left a year ago. Those that have insurance have seen unprecedented rise in premiums. Even where I'm at the cost has risen faster than inflation and my insurance is now more than my property taxes, which are the 6th highest in the country.

gsv has contacted his cousin Y who lives around Beverley Hills (yes, they very rich). They were out of town and are OK, they're a few miles away from the fire, but I'm guessing it's not moving in their direction as it doesn't sound like they're been told to evacuate.

A problem even Luigi would struggle with.

I hear the same is true across Florida. Too many storm events for insurance to handle.

What a clown, 'the other can't fill the reservoirs', that would be because, err <checks notes>, a fucking drough
It is a failure. California has unlimited solar power, they should have been building cisterns filled with semi-desalinated sea water, you cannot simply flood the area with pure sea water because you kill the land.

I would bet a lot of money that when this is over work will start, Too late for this time, as always.

It always takes an utter catastrophe to kick start prevention.

My in laws have a property in northern California in a forest area and you can't get fire insurance on it. It's a question of when, not if it burns down.

I'm sure they have re-insurance in America

It's not real
Urban needs an emoticon to indicate we think something posted is fake, which is what I though when I saw that Hollywood sign burning photo.

So, all the rich people whose houses were burned down will be fine and move somewhere else - but of course this will affect the economy that supports those rich people. I wonder if they'll ever even rebuild in those areas? I know I'd never go back if my house got burned down like that. The trauma! I'd move somewhere else entirely.
