there are numerous occasions when someone who's patently guilty doesn't go to prison, or even get convicted. so even the most prima facie case of assault, or even manslaughter, is by no means certain to lead to gaol. it's not pedantry to point that out.

On the basis of what seems to have happened what the woman did was wrong and it's not very surprising that it eventually provoked a violent response. What the driver did was wrong but it wasn't wrong because she was a woman. He would have been equally in the wrong if the passenger had been a 25 year old, male, 18 stone, professional boxer.
