Australian heat waves & bushfires

There have been very few attributed to arson, and those arson charges were things like people having a BBQ, or an unlawful burn off during a fire ban. Not people intentionally lighting bush fires.

That must be really easy to do  I've always been crap at lighting bonfires so I waited until the end of the dry period last year and used a bit of petrol to start it to burn off loads of twiggy type things. It went wooooof and the flames must have hit 20 ft high. I realized afterwards I very nearly set the valley behind me alight with the floating ash - there's loads of gorse which is incredibly inflammable.

I'm not going to light another bonfire. :(

We had a different horror story.

We put the campfire out.

Then, as we left, we saw a bush on fire. The fire had traveled underground, through the root system, and lit the bush.

Lesson learned - now, we wait for a bit prior to leaving the bonfire area.

Yes, pretty astounding weather down under.

If I was a believer I could say it was biblical, but I am not so I won't.

I thought it was all over because Oz had some rain, but apparently it isn't, Canberra is now under threat of fire and the heat has returned apparently.
Mr Barr warned the fires "may become uncontrollable" as temperatures climbed to 40C and were fuelled by strong winds.

He said the worst blaze was just south of the district of Tuggeranong, a 20-minute drive south of Parliament House in Canberra.

Looks like it is getting serious around Canberra, there is a scary timelapse film on the page below.

A bushfire near the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) grew to more than 35,000 hectares on Saturday, as officials closed a major motorway.

Residents in some areas around the capital, Canberra, were warned that it was "too late to leave" and they should try to seek shelter.

A volunteer firefighter who told the prime minister to “get fucked from Nelligan” in a viral news clip says he was sacked from the New South Wales Rural Fire Service for foul language.

“Didn’t know you could get sacked from a volunteer organisation,” he said.
