Brixton hackspace

This is actually gaining momentum now and we have our eyes on an ideal space to get started: http://www.theartworks-uk.com/

Following a very promising meeting with the landlord, we're meeting this saturday (27th July) at 6pm in the dogstar to start hammering out the official details - bank accounts, organisational structure, fundraising etc. Assuming the landlord completes his construction work on time, we should be moving in sometime in October.

If you are interested in helping set up (for real this time) a makerspace for South London, please come along and add your voice.

And yes, we'll have to change the name :D

I have to admit that I still don't really understand what this is?

(By the way - my stereo is working but still stuck half out of my dashboard because of the volume of cables behind it. Working except for the rear camera. No dents yet.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackerspace
A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace, or hackspace) is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialise and/or collaborate.

Although we're pushing the definition wider to include all forms of craft and making. The idea is to provide a workshop for the sorts of hobbies/projects that people don't have the space or tools for at home, and to build a collaborative community of people around such projects. There's a very successful one in North London: https://london.hackspace.org.uk/ but it's MILES away. So we're going to set up one for South London. Starting small, but with big ambitions :)

Glowing animal face masks

Suitcase soundsystems

For example :)

Those are awesome! :D

Could a 60/70s Samsonite hard shell be converted? It's a bit knackered and one of the locks have fallen off but it was my old dad's and I can't bring myself to chuck it away. Have been trying to come up with a good use for it! How are these powered and are they loud?

Yep, that sounds ideal for conversion :) How big is it?
They are plenty loud enough. Indoors, they'll fill a room. Outdoors, you can hear them from a long way away. Great for festivals. Wheel one round after dark and you gain an instant following. Loud enough to dance to for sure.

They've got 12V motorbike batteries and T-class amplifiers. Lasts for ages. Days of constant play at moderate volume. Took one to Boomtown Fair last year - Thursday night to Monday morning no worries.

Much like this in brown

Yeah, that'd work. You might find it a bit heavy with no wheels. Lead-acid batteries aren't light!
I can point you at all the bits you need if you want? Not hard to build.

I knew there'd be a catch! I'll just need to find a vintage luggage trolley.

Yes, details would be great. I'd love to give it a go.

Meeting went very well :) According to the backs of our envelopes, the project has legs. We've all gone away with homework and are reconvening on Weds 7th August in the dogstar to continue plotting and scheming. (https://www.facebook.com/events/382528138536056/?ref=14)

Please come along and have your say if you're interested in the idea. We're getting into the actual nuts and bolts of actually running the actual space, so now's the chance to shape the way it works.

This is rapidly approach Real Shit Happening now :)
In order to keep the wind under our wings, I'd very much like to hear from people who'd consider joining the space once it's up and running, or who'd help us set it up - both in terms of labour and money. How much would people consider paying per month to be a member? Renting a space in such a good location is not cheap, so we're going to need members, but we hope there's plenty of repressed demand.

I'd like to offer help with setting up and running but I've just committed myself to another project. I'd be up for coming and having a look once set up with a view to joining. Haven't given much thought to fees tho. Im sure you've already checked how much Hackney hackspace charge :)

I pay £25 a month to hack space and as mentioned earlier in the thread I never go. Indeed it's probably over a year since I joined with high expectations and I've not been yet so with this place *very* close to my current house (although I think it's going to now be elephant road rather than Wansey st) I'm keen.

Not sure what my availability will be like and I have bugger all money (because I piss my money up the wall by supporting things I like the idea if rather than use) but happy to help in any way I can and I will happily switch here as I'm more likely to actually use it.

We're going to have to change the name.

We won't be based in Brixton (and it looks like we won't be in Elephant now either, as the Artworks project has been delayed and the rent's gone up, but we have some excellent leads on other places). The "Tinkerspace" name informally belongs to someone else and we haven't been able to get their permission to use it. Before we can start taking membership fees and paying rent, we need to form a business, and before we can do that, we need a name for it.

Suggestions welcome! Has to be relatively short, not overly geographically specific, and have a .org or .org.uk domain available. PS: We're not keen on "hackspace" as it's descriptive of the geeky end of the maker spectrum. We want to be welcoming to arts and craftwork too.

Blimey. You are taking this very seriously!
