The source material for all of them would have been the likes of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, though, surely?

Sure, but the idea was to update the Universal films in colour, with more sex and violence and they worked their way through the 30s/40s monster classics that Universal first did. The Hammer takes on the novels were no more faithful than the Universal films had been. In its streamlining of the plot, the first Hammer Dracula is more similar to the Lugosi film than to the novel. For their first Frankenstein film Hammer wanted to use the iconic Boris Karloff make-up for the monster, but were prevented to do so because Universal had copyrighted it. With some films like The Mummy and Curse of the Werewolf there were no literary sources and only the Universal classics to remake. With the sequels to their own films, Hammer left the Universal sources more and more behind, though sometimes, as with Frankenstein Created Woman, they still pinched the odd idea from Universal
