Brexit - impact on musicians, touring and the music/events industry

You have had something to say??? Just waffle from what I've read.

What I had to say is in post 1613. There is every reason to think that the band's delay was Brexit-related.
It’s the product of years worth of neoliberal mismanagement of institutions. I don’t think you can untangle them so straightforwardly. Picking on one piece of it is like saying that the battery in a radio makes the voice come out the speaker, because when you remove the battery, the voice stops talking.

I'd say it's not a professional outfit managing their twitter account tbh - they'd have had someone proof read the statement before it was tweeted.

Indeed. Looking at the informal nature of the tweets it's almost certainly run by the band, their manager, their tour manager or a mixture of all three (as is often the case with bands at this level).

And they are going to be the people who have first hand, boots-on-the-ground knowledge of what's causing problems on the tour.

My question to you was: who handles the White Lies’ social media? Do you know?

Does it matter? They hardly planned to arrive at the gig without their kit did they. What caused it can be discussed as it could be IT/Brexit and/or weather and/or P&O being dicks. Nobody cares who typed the message into a social media account!

of course it matters.

Without wishing (too much) to turn this thread into a discussion around the nature of knowledge, the band, their manager, their tour manager or a mixture of all three may have first hand knowledge of why their gig couldn't go ahead (their gear didn't arrive at the venue in time), but they don't (and can't) have first hand knowledge of why their gear didn't arrive in time.

Round and round and round we go
Where we'll stop no one knows

It could just have been a fuck up by the tour manager and they are blaming the resulting mess on external factors?

I'm not suggesting that.

But we do know that there are a number of external factors which might have played a part, and it seems a bit problematic to simply accept the twitter post citing "Brexit legislation" as a definitive explanation without examining things a bit further.

And your evidence for it being a fuck up by the tour manager is....? You know, the very same band who have successfully played multiple European dates before and are now on a huge two month long tour across multiple countries

Absolutely fuck all, of course.

Past performance is no guarantee of future success. I note you say the band have successfully played loads of European tour dates before but make no mention of their previous association with the tour manager

We did examine things a bit further. Turns out there was an IT fuckup in the customs process (a process that only exists because of Brexit) at exactly the time the band's equipment was delayed. So said twitter post is entirely plausible.

Remember the phrase 'frictionless border' that was being bandied around a while ago? Well this is an example of a frictional border, and these are the kinds of things that happen at frictional borders.

Bands usually stick with the same tour manager but if you know different, please be sure to post up the results of your research, not that it has any bearing on the band's claims that their equipment was held up because of Brexit fuck ups.

They don't say anything about brexit fuck ups as has been pointed out to you at least five times. They refer instead to brexit legislation, as tho their predicament was not the result of computer failure or p&o's shitstorm but a permanent and foreseeable framework. But that claim doesn't really stand up to examination and if it really was to do with brexit legislation you'd expect an experienced tour manager to factor that into their planning. Research indicates they've used the same tour manager for nine years, I wonder if they'll use him next time

This whole line of argument is bizarre.

If you're a fan of Brexit, own it.

Brexit means border controls and border controls can and do fuck up. Some innocent people will suffer because of that, and clearly that's not ideal but it's worth it for the wider benefits it confers...

... or something.

But not this.

There have always been border controls when entering or leaving the UK. Who can forget (apart from you, obvs) the stationing of UK immigration officers in Calais? Your suggestion that there were no border controls before we left the European Union is such a load of cobblers I am astonished you have the front to propose it

Got much experience touring in a band across Europe, have you?

I know who I'm more inclined to believe between a working, experienced touring band and an armchair commentator.
