Brexit - impact on musicians, touring and the music/events industry

I have a set of logistic problems due to covid. I have another set of problems due to Brexit. I have some problems that fit in both sets.

Brexit has had a massive impact on my industry, and without serious government intervention/legislation will continue to do so long after covid has faded. This isn’t scaremongering, or “remoaning”, it is a simple, basic, fact.
we are in accord then. except for the bit about scaremongering or remoanering, neither of which i've mentioned.

I mean, someone who has no industry experience or understanding can try and tell me how I’m imagining all the problems and logistical headaches currently plaguing both my workload and those of everyone I know, but I want more than “my guess” as evidence…

So big bands can do it, small bands don't. Samantha Fox counts as a big band here and is able to tour Europe, it is bands with fewer fans than Samantha Fox that are the issue, do you deal with bands smaller than Samantha Fox? I had no idea she was a musician, I had only ever heard of her in relation to Page Three, wholly unaware of her musical talents.

The thing is she's not touring on her own - she's part of a big 80s package playing places like the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City and French Arena shows, so it's absolutely nothing like the same experience that small bands would have playing around Europe.

And although her success may have passed you and me by, she has reached a level of fame way beyond your average indie band travelling to Europe in a transit van.

English singer Samantha Fox has released six studio albums, five compilation albums, five remix albums, two box sets, 36 singles (including four as a featured artist), six video albums, and 21 music videos.

Really not sure why we're even talking about her in the context of Brexit and small bands, to be honest.

Maybe it's time to take stock and realise that travelling around the world isn't great for the environment. I mean you do seem very keen to stop cars polluting the environment, so in order not to appear to be a hypocrite...?

Well, I’m not the one doing the travelling. We could argue the toss all day long as to the cultural value of an orchestra visiting another country to perform vs the impact of somone driving a mile to the shops, but for now I’ll just concentrate on trying to keep a venue afloat and people in employment.

I'd argue that since the advent of youtube, the only excuse to travel abroad in order for people to hear your music is that you enjoy destroying the environment. One could argue that your role as facilitator is enabling this destructive behaviour.

You've either never been to a classical concert in your life or are attempting a troll so poor it'll be on the streets begging for pennies before midnight.

Hey, why bother travelling to see your friends and family when you can see them on Zoom? And naturally you'll never be booking a foreign holiday again when you can look at postcards and YouTube videos too, yes?

But I'm not the one stamping carbon footprint guilt trips onto all and sundry. I'm merely pointing out glaring contradictions in people's ethos.
It seems some people attempt to offset their own huge carbon footprint by telling others how to lead their lives. It's a bit hypocritical, IMHO.

You were just telling musicians how to live their lives, so I can only assume that you never take flights for work or for pleasure as that would make you a hypocrite.

Meanwhile it's perfectly possibly for bands to tour with a hugely reduced environmental impact - no more than a family going on holiday in fact - but you'd rather people sit at home burning up electricity watching YouTube videos all night.

Nope, I'm pointing out that flying around Europe whilst telling others not to drive cars or eat cows because 'carbon' is really hypocritical.
I haven't been on a plane for over 10 years, if that helps?

Just YouTube’d Sam Fox’s music, she’s gash. Not just on an I Don’t Like It style, but BB1 who plays in both a band and orchestra stated, “fucking terrible”

So it seems the bar for touring musicians has been set fairly low here.

He’ll come back with his band tours by train. Apart from the USA which can’t be toured by his band, except when they do and that was what was planned for 2021, but Brexit is the reason he ain’t touring…And Japan, which also can’t be toured cos only the EU can be toured.

She was briefly quite internationally successful, though. Seems like she's second in the bill in an 80s nostalgia tour of France (with the headliner being a guy called Boris, who is from the 90s - ask the French how this works, not me).

She is still hanging up on the walls of the most surprising places, spotted her last year , framed, fully dressed, in a restaurant in central India . Being tone deaf is no barrier to pop stardom anyway.

Not my cup of tea but the creatives must be allowed to flourish so Go Sam! I guess.

I got to hear some live music couple of weeks ago (outdoors ) for the first time in idk two years or something. When they started up (a small orchestra with brass section) the whole audience went mental cheering, it was pretty emotional after all this time. YouTube’s great though yeah,

Godalming bandstand started up again with live performances three weeks ago, BB1’s band has played live, over 1000 people came to see her and her band. Perhaps during Covid times looking closer to home may be beneficial?

Auto-Tune has a lot to answer for.
But back to the musicians touring problem... I think the future is broadcasting to your audience via the wonder of the Internet. We don't go to the cinema and expect the actors to arrive on stage. There's no reason music can't go the same way.

Sam Fox has sold over 30 million records worldwide, had 7 albums, check her discogs, when you see numbers like "87 versions" next to an album that means a massive worldwide hit - and she had a run of those

Who's "flying around Europe whilst telling others not to drive or eat cows"?

Of course, eating meat is horrendously bad for the environment and happily there's plenty of alternatives to meat, so there's no real excuse for not cutting back drastically.

Clearly a very talented musician.

I've repeatedly stated that Samantha Fox is completely irrelevant to the discussion about the problems that Brexit has inflicted on small bands, but I guess people keep bringing her up because it gives them the chance put in some cheap shots.
