Belgium swings further to the right

Who's this Left anyway? Not New Labour shurely?

I think Peet feels that anything left of the Tories is communist. He's a little like some of the Yanks we used to get around here: like pbman for instance.

Waroom? Pourquoi? even Warum?
it is spelled "waarom";)

Because I strongly oppose this increasing trend of somehow feeling "obliged" to spoon-feed everything to the English languaged population of the world, in their own language.
Other than Flemish (which shouldn't be called Dutch and Dutch should be called Netherlandic) French and German, English is not the official language of Belgium.

salaam.

As this is a pretty esoteric thread anyway, are you sure you can't spell "waarom" as "waaroom"?
Dankje wel.

aaah... my poor eyes...
You can however say: Wà? Room?
Or -even- better: Wà? Roém?
but that has more to do with coffee and ice-cream and the likes, and Antwerps dialect ;)
"Dankjewel" oh horror... is how the Dutch say this.. "dankuwel", please.

salaam.

After Belgian psephology, Dutch etymology! I'm still not convinced. Look up "waaroom" on a search engine and you don't get anything about cream. Maybe I picked it up from a Brussellaar.
DankUwel, a.u.b., if you must be more formal (or me less presumptuous).
What has this got to do with the Belgian elections? Quite a lot if you're a franchophone living in the communes around Brussels, especially those where no "facilités" for speaking French exist . . . :(

Bzzz! Fails Market Economy 101. Markets and clever clogs capitalists create money, not governments.

Is it just me or are the right a bit fucking soft in the head these days?

So, nino. What was the result of your latest bleatings to 'teacher'?
I see we're going to have to do this again, as there have been complaints from various different people and nothing polite has worked. If either of you (for the sake of even-handedness) replies to, mentions the other's username or refers to them or what they have posted in any way, you will be banned. For at least a week.

edit: which includes responding to someone's whinging about this, which I'm sure will come, though perhaps we will all be pleasantly surprised

That would be "Brusselaar". ;) ("room/roém" I used in its meaning of crème fraîche or crème Chantilly.)

No, if "dankuwel" is written as one one word (which is grammatically incorrect, of course) from that follows the impossibility of writing a capital in the middle of a word.
The correct version would be:
"Dank U wel" or "dank u wel"
(and never "dank je wel" if you want to avoid to be taken for a Dutch).

In 1963, after the establishment of the language frontier these particular communities introduced extra-facilities for the francophones.
According to the Flemish that was in order to ease their integration into Flanders, hence those facilities were seen as having a temporary character. According to the francophones this detail doesn't exist.
In the actual situation there is no sign of willingness to "integrate" of the francophones left.

And by the way, the insane Nabholz report adressing the "problems" of the francophone "minority" in Flanders made them the laughing stock everywhere. The poor sods... They need "European protection".
:):):)
In addition there are no facilities for Flemish in quite a few francophone communities.
So all in all, you are flogging the wrong political horse, I'm afraid. I have relatives both in Flanders and in La Wallonie and to me (and them) these ongoing idiocies about language and "identity" in Brussels is nothing else than clutching to straws by extremists.
It is so typical Belgian that Yves Leterme is half Wallon, was raised with French as first language (of course bilingual, but who isn't in Belgium) and is now so called the fervent defender of the Flemish Cause.

Belgian politics. I always found it amusing to watch.

salaam.

Agreed, it's sorta amusing. It seems to be the Flems, now they are the top dogs economically, getting their revenge for a hundred years of domination by the francophone bourgeoisie. Although the francophones are a minority in Flanders there's still enough of them to elect one member to the 124-member Flemish Parliament, but in the communes with facilités round Brussels they are in the majority and their democratic right to deal with administrations in the their own language is continually under threat by petty tracasseries from the Flemish government and its civil servants. To defend this democratic right doesn't seem to me to be "extremist". The real extremists are on the other side in the fascistic Vlaams Blok (or whatever it's called now) and the TAK (Taal Aktie Komite -- Language Action Committee).
That there are no facilities for nederlandophones "in quite a few francophones communities" is news to me. Which communities would these be?
Having said this, the position in Brussels where people can choose which "language community" to be associated with for education and cultural purposes seems to me to be a model solution for such conflicts elsewhere, i.e people chose which "lanuague community" (French or Dutch) to belong to and vote in a corresponding college for those to run these matters. This avoids disputes over territory and the imposition of one language over another such as is, precisely, happening in the communes around Brussels but also in other parts of Europe including Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
PS OK, d'accord, I don't know how to spell vlaams (is that right?:) ). But I'm not alone. Put "Brussellaar" into a search engine and see what comes up.
