Beauty products that actually work

Forgot my other budget beauty tip - get a cheap refillable spray bottle from Muji or Superdrug and fill it with culinary grade rosewater. Add a few drops of glycerin and shake. Hey presto! Rosewater toner. I spritz it on my face after cleansing and before serum etc. smells gorgeous and adds another layer of moisture.

God, I sound like a wanker. :D:facepalm:

I have been using Liz Earle cleanse and polish hot cloth cleanser (snappy! :D) for years and it's great stuff. Really notice a difference when I run out (it's not available in HK) Her moisturisers are very good too, and I can't speak for the toners cos I don't tone, much to the FURY of shop assistants that I mention it to :D
Just started using a Neal's Yard night cream - frankincense I think, it's for "mature" skin  and am not too keen so far, it feels nice on but I think it's too claggy for my skin as I've had more spots since using it. That said, that could also be the effects of hormones.
I was gutted that coconut oil didn't work out for me - I got really pimpley. It would have been such a great all purpose cheap and natural product.
My best tip for looking younger though, and the source of the most compliments on how young I look, has been....getting a fringe. Et voila, wrinkles cunningly hidden behind hair :D

I am the same. I only wash my face in the bath with a clean and clear facial scrub (every other day).
I too use face wipes in-between to remove any make up I might be wearing but if I only have mascara on then I usually sleep in it
I do moisturise well whenever I wash or use wipes. I use Body Shop Vitamin E stuff and I really love it. Light, not greasy but really soaks in to the skin well,
Also i find I scar and and don't heal very easily from spots etc so the vitamin E really helps. I notice the difference in that when I use something different if I run out.

But I will be following whatever advice you get gaijingirl as I do really need to start taking better care of my skin but it has to be easy (and not to expensive) or I am just not going to do it.

Avoiding sun damage makes a massive difference, it's worth getting a moisturiser with SPF I reckon

ok.. I did the routine last night with leftover stuff I have here and the lovely manter oil. My skin was all glowy this morning, so that was nice. I also have some mother and baby massage oil, which is a mixture of 3 oils, mainly almond oil. It's almost 5 years old but very posh. That should be ok for the face shouldn't it?

Gonna try and get some serum, cleanser and flannels in Sainsbury's today.. might not have time to do Lidl too and I have to go to Sainsbury's.

Maybe stick to brands you know you won't react to. What is it that your skin doesn't like?
In not sure off the top of my head but do have a link somewhere to ingredients of different moisturisers for dry skins, so can compare between ones which make me red and itch and ones that are ok.

So far, simple and aveeno don't cause a reaction. Use the simple on my face, but that's it, wash and moisturise.

I've use Simple before as a hot cloth cleanser (the creamy one. Foaming cleansers are to be avoided IMHO). La Roche Posay (stocked in Boots) does a sensitive skin range called Toleriane and I've always liked their stuff. A neutral oil might be ok and not spendy either?

They do have a cleanser, I could try that instead of the facial wash? :hmm: and I'm pretty safe with base oils, but might wait and see what the docs say about my face.

Serum interests me though.

Oh, I missed why you shouldn't wash your face in the shower?

I think because the water is too hot. Hot flannel or muslin is the way to go.

I am pale as anything and never ever go in the sun.
I walk around under an umbrella ALL summer
My foundation has an SPF but tbh even with winter sun I am always faced away from it.
Sun worshipper I am not.

Ooh that does sound nice!
I have some culinary rose water already.

Liz Earle brings me out in monster spots. It's quite bizarre as everyone else raves about it.

I have started using a decleor rose oil-serum a mate have me for Christmas and it's gorgeous. My skin is all plump and lovely.

Same mate bought me crayons- crayon eyeshadow, blusher and lipstick. It's brilliant, I just crayon my face in the morning :D

I am thinking I might try a switch to brown mascara for normal/day wear.
As i said I am quite pale and my hair is getting lighter as I am getting older (as in less red).
My eye brows and lashes used to be white but they are more transparent now :hmm:

I wear a brown pencil eyeliner sometimes and when I pencil my eyebrows a bit that is a light brown colour.

Seems to make sense.

Rebelda what one do you use?

so am I then! :D

You might be but at least your enjoying and living life

Haha - yeh kitty, that's exactly what I thought! :D:thumbs:

I reckon a lot of it is genes anyway. My Dad isn't very wrinkly at all and he's 70.

Whereas my mother looks about 150 and is wrinklier than a dehydrated prune, and yes, they are dehydrated already!

gaijingirl - heh - I've had to start getting up 10 minutes fucking earlier in the morning to fit it all in! :D I am a TERRIBLE dawdler though. I always mean to get in the shower, quick scrub and out, and then I go off on a daydream, take for bloody ever, and make myself late again

Oooo - I have another recommendation, again from Boots. Their Botanics microdermabrasion scrub - fucking EXCELLENT! Used it this morning, got rave reviews from bloggers etc. On offer at the mo as well http://www.boots.com/en/Botanics-Radiant-Youth-Microdermabrasion-Polish-120ml_1262003/

Annnnd - that No 7 Youthful Eye Serum is the dog's bollocks, and I have stoner bags so it must be bloody good!
:cool::thumbs::thumbs:

I don't think I'm gonna bother buying the Pore Refiner stuff though. It's good, but the eye serum is better, and I can't afford to buy both. I reckon I'll just sneak a sample every now and again of it, from different stores :D

Oh, and I've carried on washing my face in the shower - using a scrub or a facial cleanser. Just turn the temp down while you do it :) And I've been using Simple cleanser and toner Biddlybee - these, plus all the other stuff, my skin's been fine with, and I've got very sensitive skin.

ok.. so i bought a serum today - it was the cheapest one in Sainsbury's to tell the truth (L'Orleal I think). I'm going to continue washing my face in the shower with face wash, but then do the whole serum, moisturiser, oil thing and try to do the routine at night. I'm going to use up the products I have at home - I found a Body Shop Vitamin E nightcream and various daytime moisturisers - all quite cheap ones tbh. If I find that I stick with it and use them all up, I'll treat myself to something fancy down the line when I've got a job.

I don't know if it actually did make a different to my skin or not but it made me feel better about myself - which is kind of the point really.

I'm totally converted to brown. I bought a black for going out, but honestly I prefer the brown for always. It's YSL 'faux cils' waterproof. I've used the same mascara (just switched to waterproof though, because it was sliding off me) for 10 years, so I've no idea what else is good :D

I just googled this and discovered that I recommended it on the first page of this thread!
Haha did you?! I will have to read this thread in full. Having been a bit of a slob for years, I never really came in here, but now I'm an old bag in need of a refurb that seems to have changed :D

It is brilliant int it?! I used it this morning without any eye cream too (mainly cos a great big blob came flying out and I couldn't get it back in )

I use a decleor serum too (the neroli one) and by Jesus it's lovely. I don't use it all the time but it's one thin I don't like to run out of as it's a really good nourishing and balancing thing to have. I have substituted it for herbfarmacy's beauty balm which is also amazing and much much cheaper. Their stuff is really good quality and really effective
At the momen I'm finishing up the decleor hydra floral moisturiser (which is fucking amazing: moisturise and soothing without being heavy which is essential for me as I get horrible spots) and then moving on to an elemis pro-collagen marine cream which is good but not as glowifying as the hydrafloral.

Speaking of spots, I've had some massive fuckers this week due to stress and lack of sleep (two things I've noticed cause an outbreak for me, why is that?) so I bought a honey face mask from Lush and they've healed amazingly well overnight. Not gone but now they're camouflagable which they certainly were not yesterday

Oh yeah, I would recommend Gatineaus Melatogenine mask as well. But leave it in overnight rather than washing it off. Made my skin moisturised, plumper and helped with healing scabby bits before too.

I used to use Aveda's moisturiser for sensitive skin, but haven't been able to justify the price for a long while!

Is serum supposed to sting when you put it on? It really does and still feels a bit sore 30 minutes later (it's Olay by the way, not L'Oreal as I said above).
