Hmm yeah, that's a bit iffy imo.
Vegetarians and vegans get asked a LOT "why?" by people who eat meat, but when they answer, people do get defensive. It's often been people they barely know, and pretty confrontational. That's my experience and every non-meat eater I've ever talked to about this.
I honestly don't go around asking people I barely know why they eat meat. No, I don't approve quite honestly, but I don't think that approach would make them change their minds, and I don't automatically assume they're bad people; I just think they're wrong.
Oh, and "Mmmm, lovely burger!" at people who don't eat meat. Over and over and over: ie, "Just be pliant and quiet about your choice not to eat meat even though I'll wave it in your face for fun because hilarious (and makes me feel better maybe)."
