Attacking trade unions and trade unionism

Supposedly the fox vote wont pass as the SNP are gong to vote against it. Id expect even Labour lackeys wouldnt vote for this. Could it really pass?

I like how subs from millions of workers is considered somehow undemocratic as a funding model yet being funded by half a dozen billionairs is somehow not

Yeah, but how many union members actively choose to fund Labour via their subs?

I had to actively opt out of giving them money rather than opt in.

Just because the Tories are wrong doesn't mean the way union barons hand over millions to a party that actively works against the day to day interests of their members (at work and in their communities) is right

Provided that it's clear on TU websites and in their application forms for membership that there's a political fund which members can opt out of, I don't see the issue with opting out.

I didn't say it was an I'd opt out myself as I don't think much of Labour. That wasn't my point- my point was which model of funding is more democratic

TUC are highlighting an interesting point I hadn't noticed before - unions will have to give 14 days notice of any intent to use facebook during industrial action! Given how widely the courts have interpreted anti-union legislation in the past, that could probably be applied to any union member making any comment about a strike at all

Also scope here to go after unions on the use of social media if social media posts in favour of a strike on the day could count as exceeding the six person limit of a picket...

some bullshit, I've never worked in a place that was unionised let alone had anyone try to browbeat me into striking (not that they would need to). Where are all these evil union bullies giving scabs a chinese burn? nowhere. Evil looks and not invited down the pub after work is the harshest punishment the donut buying scab can expect

The opposite is much more likely, in many workplaces not having a scab mentality makes you the outsider

In September I become an assistant branch secretary full time for a year. The branch secretary will be carving out a 'career' at a regional level. No other fucker would touch it, I stood unopposed. We have about 4,000 members.

I may well be asking for advice here in the months ahead. I'm lost, frankly. And angry. Last Friday my local authority announced a 'restructure' with 104 predicted posts deleted. I'm unsure whether this is a barren seam in terms of solid, tangible opposition. This 'corporate' unionism makes my skin crawl. I'm aware this is a thankless task and my views are probably not 100% acceptable in this outfit currently, but I'm determined to make a lot of noise.

Here's the consultation (launched yesterday) on "tackling intimidation of non-striking workers": https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/tackling-intimidation-of-non-striking-workers

The consultation document sets out the detail of what the govt propose doing and asks for feedback. It's worth reading :(

Time for the TUs to reinvent themselves, perhaps.

That's bleak. Thanks for the links

when was your facility time negotiated?

It's being renegotiated at the moment. I'll know soon, but full-time is what predecessor had. Unsure when it was last negotiated.
perhaps be useful to talk to your counterparts at neighbouring local authorities to get a feeling for what other people have got - if you can show other people have the same should help you keep your f.t. - and it may be some places have more (i think barking and dagenham pretty good).

I've had no part in the negotiations tbh. I've been busy with my substantive post and repping the rest of the time, but I'll have a scout for info, cheers.
