Argentina moves to the right

The CGT has called a general strike on 24 January to oppose Milei’s proposals for labour law reform and privatisation.

You can sign a petition to support it at Support Argentina's general strike against Milei's far-right offensive

A new report, not had time to read it myself yet:

Milei looks weaker than feared, but he has been getting most of his way in terms of legal changes. Difficult one to call.

Every time I see the term “anarcho-capitalist” my brain chucks out a stack of error messages.

The majority of Argentinians now in poverty....

Argentina’s poverty rate has surged to 52.9 per cent under its government’s austerity programme, in a warning sign for libertarian President Javier Milei as his popularity begins to falter.
The rate, published by the national statistics agency on Thursday, is the worst in two decades and 11.2 percentage points higher than in the second half of 2023, when it stood at 41.7 per cent, meaning 3.4mn Argentines have fallen into poverty this year

Thought this was worth sharing

Argentina was the only country to vote against a United Nations resolution promoting the end of all forms of online violence against women and girls...a total of 170 nations voted in favor, while 13 others abstained, including Iran, Russia, Nicaragua, and North Korea

His government has halted the purchase of essential supplies for abortion access, banned gender-inclusive language in official documents, and replaced the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity with a less powerful undersecretariat within the Ministry of Human Capital.

I saw a shill online saying that Milei has successfully brought down inflation ... Is this correct does anyone know? Shill was jubilant and of course looking forward to MuskTrump doing the same with DOGE

In a word: No.

Milei came to power in December last year. At that point, inflation was running at 211% pa. In the first seven months of his presidency, inflation was higher than this. It recently dipped below 200% for the first time since just before his presidency.

There is no evidence in these numbers that Milei's policies have tackled inflation in any way.
