I was pretty ABEy until '96. Even after that, I just don't give much of a toss about England generally. As a Tranmere supporter, we don't really have much contact with the England team (well, not the men's, the women have played at Prenton a few times. Some raised eyebrows about them coming to the home of the Super White Army just after the Aluko racism mess). Joe Hart did play for us three times on loan, but he was shit then too.
Before '96, there was just too much utter bullshit associated with being an 'England' fan. I put England in scare quotes partly because of the fact that, prior to '96, most fans waved bloody Union flags, not the English one, almost as if there were some imperialistic jingoism going on. I also remember the shite my non-white friends got at school about them not supporting England cos, y'know, they were foreign. And most of them did support England. Then there was also the vileness when England did go out, which usually just turned nasty.
'96 did change that a bit, maybe it was lotsw more people who didn't usually go to matches doing so that changed it, maybe it was England actually doing well. The press (S*n excepted) stopped being quite as jingoistic and crap, and post-defeat violence dropped right off. Sport has always been used as war by any other means, and I am still kind of please when Argentina beat us. Tho, generally speaking, I'm not too fussed and just enjoy a good game. (This did not apply when cheating preening **** Ronaldo robbed us of a place in the semis)
