Are You "Anyone But England"?

I think you might find it hard if the buggers actually go on to win the thing. I might just leave the country for a few weeks if that happens.
Not really....I don't watch any scheduled telly, am not buying newspapers, it's very easy not to click on any links to World Cup stories. I just hear bellowing up and down the street from time to time and that's the only way I know that England are playing :D

There are some huge benefits to living alone...

I was pretty ABEy until '96. Even after that, I just don't give much of a toss about England generally. As a Tranmere supporter, we don't really have much contact with the England team (well, not the men's, the women have played at Prenton a few times. Some raised eyebrows about them coming to the home of the Super White Army just after the Aluko racism mess). Joe Hart did play for us three times on loan, but he was shit then too.

Before '96, there was just too much utter bullshit associated with being an 'England' fan. I put England in scare quotes partly because of the fact that, prior to '96, most fans waved bloody Union flags, not the English one, almost as if there were some imperialistic jingoism going on. I also remember the shite my non-white friends got at school about them not supporting England cos, y'know, they were foreign. And most of them did support England. Then there was also the vileness when England did go out, which usually just turned nasty.

'96 did change that a bit, maybe it was lotsw more people who didn't usually go to matches doing so that changed it, maybe it was England actually doing well. The press (S*n excepted) stopped being quite as jingoistic and crap, and post-defeat violence dropped right off. Sport has always been used as war by any other means, and I am still kind of please when Argentina beat us. Tho, generally speaking, I'm not too fussed and just enjoy a good game. (This did not apply when cheating preening **** Ronaldo robbed us of a place in the semis)

Shit recipe. Chilli is never optional

Like me with royal-related stuff. It's just an irrelevant, slightly but not hugely annoying background noise.

It is odd how it goes down on here. On every thread, when there's a bit of silly 'it's coming home' in-joking the complaints roll in and it descends into sad bickering.

I'm not particularly patriotic but I like the arbitrary opportunity to watch good (or shit) football and support England. It's fun...and yeah a bit primitive but it doesn't mean anything. Better to have an avenue for it than not imo.

You'll have to fuck off longer than that. They still bang on about 1966 and that's more than a few weeks ago.
But how much did people bang on about 1966 in, say, 1970?

I think people will find, if England win the WC, that England WC winners is a remarkably similar place to England not WC winners.

Im surprised there’s been no comment on this.

Is racist language ok as long as it’s aimed at the English?
Yes.

My experience too...there was still fuckery in 96 (smashing German cars etc) but there was a wider feeling of reclaiming the team from Them. Genuine good buzz in London that summer for the most part.

I'm the same. I don't watch scheduled telly and don't buy newspapers. HOWEVER when my home page bbc.com is 100% saturated with England football and related stories every time the buggers win, yes I don't have to click on them but I can't unsee those headlines.

Plus all those numpties flying the St Georges flags out of their windows, and on their cars, and every shop has a St Georges flag to show how patriotic they are, etc etc, all that is hard to avoid unless you're out of the country. For me, unfortunately, the England flag is always associated with the NF, BNP and EDL, which may seem a bit unfair, but they have kinda claimed it as their own similar to how the nazis claimed the swastika. Hindus have to be very discrete if they wish to display their own symbol for fear of being called racist.

Decades of English sporting triumphs being described as English victories and Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish triumphs being described as British victories...

... England can go get fucked sports wise.

Hmmm. that's something I used to pull English people up on - 'you mean Britain/British?' They do do it a lot, I agree (and not just in sports), and I think it's only non-English people who notice. Don't bother any more. Life's too short.

Football and ABE is weird. It's so stressy and serious.

With cricket I enjoy the aussie/England trollling. It's funny most of the time and generally people don't take it seriously. On top of that, people from neither country are more likely to be neutral.

Football seems to be different. It seems to prompt more rage, more competitiveness, more stupidity.

Personally I don't give a toss what people support And the ABE thing could be a laugh if it was done with any humour. But it's usually so fucking dour and is often harking back to some English oppressor stuff which seems oddly out of place when discussing a silly sporting event.
Absolutely this. Especially from some of the Welsh contingent. Why do they get so lavabreaded up???

"My impression is England hoolies didnt fancy their chances in Russia"

Thats because most of the "top boys" ala Danny Dire have been banned
The Russians were ok against middle class students
Fucking hell!

Wasn’t expecting out and out racism on here either.

Surely a Ban or warning is in order ?

A lot of people do expect the Welsh and Scottish and rUK to support england, they really do and get all hurt, confused and sometimes aggressive when people don't as they can't get their tiny minds around it

Never understood all this hurt
Most people i know are anybody but Wales,Scotland. For some reason not so much ireland.
I was in a Pub when Portugal beat Wales and it turned into a massive party with much celebration.
Its the Media that come out with all this rubbish that we want the home countries to win.
Its a Myth.
I got my love of football from my favorite uncle idwall, born and bred in Aberfan.
I think the internet has much too do with all the hate now.

Welsh fans don't go looking for trouble or trash towns and cities abroad sunshine, big difference
Wales fans land UEFA award for 'outstanding contribution' to Euro 2016
Police praise for Wales fans in France

if the engerlund hard nuts thought they could get away with it in Russia they would
And the hard nuts from Croatia, Argentina, Brazil, Russia etc. (Plenty of others but they didn't necessarily qualify for this WC). Do you think there's something unique about the English ones?
