Are You "Anyone But England"?

I am unashamedly anyone but England, and I also most definitely fail the Norman Tebbit cricket test, and won't be getting on my bike. Even though I do like sports, I have avoided watching any of the England matches but it's hard to avoid the saturation coverage. I'm hoping the Swedes to a number on the rosbifs and shut everyone up so that we can concentrate on the football.

No one seriously thinks all England fans are a bunch of dangerous gammon-larvae.

No, true, but like all stereotypes, people occasionally chuck things like that into conversation or on threads. Obviously, when questioned, they admit they don't mean ALL England fans. I'm just pointing it out, for the record like.

Personally I don't give a toss what people support And the ABE thing could be a laugh if it was done with any humour. .

yep, this. I'm a massive sports fan. But it is only sport.

I find this stuff even more mystifying in club football, tbh, where people do genuinely hate supporters of other clubs (normally their immediate neighbours), enough to start fights with them. It's idiotic.

Is it *always* genuine hatred? As opposed to a big pre-arranged scrap with its own rules?

I used to work with a lovely Kerryman who hated the ABEs. Dismissed them, as bitter nobheads.

This was a very patriotic Irishman too

I remember when England got their asses booted out of Euro 96 by Germany in a penalty shoot out. I happened to be driving an Audi 80 at the time and stopped at a traffic lights outside a pub full of thuggish English fans who attacked my car. It wasn't until I got home that I learned there were reports of German cars and people being attacked and a Beetle rolled over. What a bunch of numpties.

...
I drew Belgium in a work draw so I'm cheering for them until they're out and then I'll cheer for Britain as my neighbour.

If this is about the football World Cup, I don't think Britain is competing, is it? :D (And I nearly ruined that snarky smartarse-ness of that by referring to the "Word Cup", which is sort of interesting as a concept. A bit like the old "Call my Bluff", mabye.)
...
There is a kind of tongue in cheek ribbing that goes on ..like the crisps thread but the vast majority of people here know that people in England are ok.

Was that coherent?

Eta. I should point out that I know squat about football

I don't know about this crisps thread. :hmm: Unsure whether to look for it as it might be even more fuss than football, although, to be fair, I am feeling quite proud of my football-ignoring skills to day, as it's only from a thread title in Urban that I learned that the whole thing apparently finishes next week.

I'll avoid the crisps thread if for no other reason that it is already making me greedy for crisps. Probably a very healthy thing, really, to eat salty stuff in this hot weather. See - I don't even *have* crisps but am making excuses already. :(

The history of some local hatred does actually have some historical basis (e.g. Southampton-Portsmouth, West Ham-Millwall, Rangers-Celtic). But some is just based around locality and the desire to hate someone. Reading sing about how they hate Swindon. No idea why. It's fucking miles away.

I like this team, work hard not showy

Southgate seems like a good egg

I can't hear English comentário anymore :D

So I'd not even mind if England won ( something I couldn't have ever imagined myself saying)

How does that support the idea of them *all* being thugs, though?

Mind you, would be interesting to see what happens if they lose due to an own goal that turns out later to be a handball.

What was the point of your post again? Especially in the context of quoting mine?
I agreed right at the start of the post, not all English fans. I was simply sharing the experience I had with "some" English "fans" who reacted badly to England getting kicked out of the Euros by Germany.

Unfortunately it is this thuggish minority that have blighted the reputation of England football fans across the world and the reason they were banned from Europe for 10 years, although hopefully that has calmed down a bit and won't rear it's ugly head again in Russia if (or hopefully when) they get kicked out of the world cup.

My impression is England hoolies didnt fancy their chances in Russia

Isn't it just this? I mean, I have nothing to say about sport at all, but sometimes you're in a position where you have to take part a little bit to be polite. Even I know you're supposed to take the piss out of the other person's team.

I just say that I'm not interested in football, and that shuts the conversation down - or at least others continue without my involvement.
