Are You "Anyone But England"?

Am a plastic paddy and, based on no logic whatsoever, support Ireland in the rugby and England football. No neutrality when they play each other in rugby but I'm more subdued when they meet on a football pitch. Conversely, it's only England (and Millwall) goals that make me run around and not know how I ended up in the street :D

I don't think English football fans expect anyone not English to support them  I mean sure, roll your eyes at our excitement and inevitable devastation, but we've got to get our feelings out somewhere :D I really don't understand why it's so bothersome. The 50 years of hurt, we were robbed, it's coming home stuff is tongue in cheek glee yunno. It seems so silly to get angry at/about it.

I'll tell you what annoys me (England and Millwall hat on here): extrapolating some fans who behave like pricks (believe me we think so too) to tarnish all of us. Eta: usually the worst offenders aren't even fans, they just turn up for an excuse to misbehave.

And if we're using anecdotes as data  I worked in football pubs for years and never ever had any bother. The only times it kicked off were when club firms had a brawl outside and I don't personally have a problem with that. Consenting adults, no damage to property or people not wanting to have a row. And it was never the Wall fwiw.

I'm English and yes. Why? Because I'm a miserable, contrarian bastard who is completely devoid of nationalism and with no interest in the game and I can't be arsed with all the fuss and shit it causes.
When the last game was on I was watching TV with my balcony door open because of the heat and I had to have the TV volume on max to hear it, and that was just because of 1 other flat with their door open. I dread the idea of them winning the thing.:mad:

I've had several people express surprise that people in Wales aren't supporting England. Maybe I just know twats? (sorry mum)

A lot of people do expect the Welsh and Scottish and rUK to support england, they really do and get all hurt, confused and sometimes aggressive when people don't as they can't get their tiny minds around it

Call out thread!! bin ban gooly whatsit
If the cap fits, eh...? I haven't even read the forums to which Spymaster refers, but your comments here are...instructive :D

Sorry to hear your feewings are all hurt
Don't flatter yourself. Spymaster, whom I know a little, does not strike me as someone much inclined to having his feelings hurt, however much of a fantasy that might be for you.

(rest of self-justifying guff ignored)

I'm Irish.
I think most here would know that I abhor what was done to Ireland in the past by the British. But I'm not stupid enough to think that everything in Britain is awful or worthy of only hate and disdain.

Half my family went over there to work in the 1900s...1930s..1940s..1950s..1960s...1970s...1980s. Etc.

I drew Belgium in a work draw so I'm cheering for them until they're out and then I'll cheer for Britain as my neighbour.

There is a kind of tongue in cheek ribbing that goes on ..like the crisps thread but the vast majority of people here know that people in England are ok.

Was that coherent?

Eta. I should point out that I know squat about football

This is news to me. Genuinely. Well those people go on the eejit list too then (sorry Plumdaff's mum). I would hypothesise that lots of these people might be 4 yearly spectators rather than football fans? Don't people know how tribalism works, jeez :D

I'll have a go at a few reasons
It's the whole hype, build up, expectation, righteousness and arrogance
It's the presuming the whole country (meaning uk) is behind them
It's the reporting on tv, radio and the web, oh and the papers of course
It's the jingoism
It's the "we was robbed" boohooing and looking for a scapegoat when losing
It's this kind of shit https://www.urban75.net/forums/attachments/screenshot_20180703-205824-jpg.139863/
It's the attitude and behaviour of englund fans, the violence
It's the dish it out but can't take it
I got called racist for cheering on Colombia the other night and people were offended, get over your fucking self
It's the media reporting on english sports people that win in the olympics and commonwealth and similar competitions as english but Welsh and Scottish as british

And for me it's first hand experiences of working at a venue and having to get extra security, be worried about mine and other staff's safety and have to be ready for violence if englund lost, also people crying, really crying, some wailing, utterly pathetic
And when I was in Portugal for the euros the engerlish fans immediately started kicking off when they lost, went out of the pub and started throwing things at locals and their cars
When Portugal lost, everyone just got up and quietly went home, it was a revelation

and finally it's all this "it's coming home bollocks", it was bollocks then and even more bollocks now

Sure this is what you want and it will be picked apart to fuck, sure there's more but this'll do for now
e2a how could i forget the 30/40/50 and now 52 years of "hurt"!, laughable and more entitlement

Anyone who hates on another nation's football team for reasons not relating to football is a bit odd. E.g. I dislike Uruguay largely because of Suarez but I have literally no beef at all with Uruguay nor its people. Likewise I wouldn't hate on the Saudi team because they have a barbaric government, or USA because of Trump. I'll cheer them on if they play well. Same for Russia.

However if someone from another British nation is indifferent to England, or supports the other side, because of a certain contingency of boring fucks bleating on about '66 and being anti Welsh/Scottish then I've sympathy with that. I find it moronic that some English just like to wind up Welsh and Scottish people for a laugh, and vice versa. It seems to get ugliest when it comes to football. It doesn't happen nearly as much in Rugby or other sports. Why football in particular has to attract this childish bickering from both sides is really fucking weird, and obviously where this whole ABE thing comes from.

If idiot England and non-England fans just stopped with the anti-English / anti-Welsh /anti-Scottish stuff then none of this would be a thing.

I'm not interested in football, and although I think of myself as British, I'm Scottish rather than English.

But whatever the claimed justification, being Anyone But England strikes me as pathetic. If you don't care about football, just ignore it. If you do enjoy football but would rather not support England, just enjoy the football as a neutral. But why expend any energy on making a show of hating England, unless you really want to look ridiculous.

I'm certainly not proud to be British and rather embarrassed by it; Concentration camps, Iraq, Afganistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, arms trade etc. But tend to support British teams. I can't help my place of both. And so it is with my footie team, who I have stuck by through thick and thin, because they were myvlocal team, because they were the first team I went to.
saying this, I do think people go ott with their patroism at times.

Ahhhh, Thragon! I wasn’t expecting to see such a reasonable, even-handed, and popular fellow like you on this thread!

A lot of people do expect the Welsh and Scottish and rUK to support england, they really do and get all hurt, confused and sometimes aggressive when people don't as they can't get their tiny minds around it

Agreed with a couple of your posts earlier in thread, but here in Nottingham people kind of expect me to be a little bit ABE, or at least nominally wanting a particular other team to win.

I wouldn't say I'm ABE - be nice if they win on Saturday but I'd sooner they didn't get to the final, though; that wouldeither mean weeks of insufferable whining or expecting to win every time for the next 100 years.

I don't give a fuck who other people support. I get a bit annoyed at people saying 'look at all you England fans, smashing stuff up when you win or lose, animals' when I've done nothing of the sort in my life. I once dropped a pint glass at that big casino in Leicester Square and it still, 5 years later, fills me with shame. And that was an accident.

It's a Spymaster wind up though, again. You love a bit of drama don't ya!

There is a kind of tongue in cheek ribbing that goes on ..
Isn't it just this? I mean, I have nothing to say about sport at all, but sometimes you're in a position where you have to take part a little bit to be polite. Even I know you're supposed to take the piss out of the other person's team.

I support Wales.

In football, I support England if Wales aren't there, and always have and always have strongly.

In cricket, I support England (which is actually England and Wales, really), and anyone but Australia.

In rugby I support Wales and mostly, but not necessarily always, anyone but England. (I'm not a huge rugby fan, mind.)

There is no logic involved in any of this.

Football and ABE is weird. It's so stressy and serious.

With cricket I enjoy the aussie/England trollling. It's funny most of the time and generally people don't take it seriously. On top of that, people from neither country are more likely to be neutral.

Football seems to be different. It seems to prompt more rage, more competitiveness, more stupidity.

Personally I don't give a toss what people support And the ABE thing could be a laugh if it was done with any humour. But it's usually so fucking dour and is often harking back to some English oppressor stuff which seems oddly out of place when discussing a silly sporting event.
