re Houthi attacks and drones:

The Houthi are capable of manufacturing their own drones and have fine tuned the production process. Their most powerful drone can carry 18 kg of explosives and has a range of 1500 km. (Samad 3)

(It is also believed that aqap sourced the drones they used for attacks throughout 23 from the houthi)

The UK's deterrent strikes working about as well as expected then.

Military force is a weird thing. Even weirder since air strikes became a thing. It's fully accepted you can't win a war just with air strikes. The destruction of Gaza, largely by air strikes, shows exactly what Israel is up to. They have no belief this will win a war against Hamas. But they do know they can, because of the circumstances and context and geography, successfully displace a population with nowhere to go by destroying (then taking) their land. They aren't trying to win a war, they are sadistically, revengefully, ethnically cleansing.

The air strikes on Yemen are similarly spiteful. Because they know what the result will be, has been already. An increase in Houthi attacks since the strikes began. They know air strikes can't win anything in this situation but political history says something must be done. Even when you know that the illogical will be done. These strikes aren't even designed as a war against the Houthis. The US and the UK admit this. These strikes are to show western capitalism cannot be allowed to look unprotected. Even if you know the result will be a much more tenuous, fragile protection. Always with consequences.

We are bombing people, to no avail, because they are hurting capitalism to stop a genocide. It was never going to work. But something must be done.

The theory I heard posited this week is that the availability of cheap explosive drones is as big a revolution in warfare as gunpowder or steel was - asymmetrical warfare , including the asymmetry of wealth/military costs, has just been blown wide open. AI / robot war technology on the horizon is only going to make that difference ever bigger. The response from USUK is a great example.

...then again the Ukraine war shows some things haven't changed at all...

Aqap using drones in attacks against southern forces marked a big turning point in the yemeni conflict. This was a new thing in 23.

The BBC World Service documentary American Mercenaries : Killing in Yemen is definitely worth a watch. Kind of surprised that it's not been mentioned on this thread yet.

The documentary details how a supposedly 'counter-terrorism' force, including a mercenary company comprised of US mercenaries and lead by an Israeli assassinated targets that were not terrorists, including the 18 year old son of a human rights lawyer etc. The assassinations were initially blamed on ISIS. This was allegedly done on behalf of the UAE government to eliminate political figures they didn't like, and possibly with the knowledge of the CIA. It is also alleged in the film that the supposedly 'counter-terrorist' force also enlisted the help of arrested members of Al Qaeda, including a leading AQ member who was involved in the attack on the USS Cole, killing 17 US Navy sailors and wounding 39 in 2000. The mercenary company (by the name of Spear Operations) also trained Yemenis to carry out the attacks. These operations are also very possibly ongoing aswell.

As I say, it's a BBC documentary and it is available on YouTube, though you have to sign in to watch it.

Thank you for this.

From a purely professional POV, how about this fucking logo? :D

I mean I could pop some search terms into Midjourney and in 2 minutes have 10 better options. Looks like someone's been busy in fucking powerpoint.

Again, you post some crap twitter account with misinformation (did you read the thread) and no comment of your own.

It's ok. I'll take it what you meant to say was "US telegraphs another operation to pointlessly bomb some sand and an empty warehouse in order to definitely not escalate anything, oh no Sir"

That's what you were going to say right?

yes

Slightly related fun fact - the houthi's air force consists of one plane. It has been seen as part of a military parade over Sana'a, so yes, it definitely flies.

that Ukraine aid budget of 50 Billion blows my mind....

Yemen was promised 2.1 billion in aid in 2023. About 1 billion was actually delivered, the rest was forgotten about.

3 in 4 people in Yemen experience food shortages.

edit - even worse than that:

of 4.3 billion US dollars demanded / agreed by the UN for a humanitarian relieve plan only 1.2 billion were delivered.

as a comparison: it is estimated that the houthi's diverted at least 1.8 billion in 23. They have looted about 14 billion USD since the beginning of the conflict. This is additional to the money received form friendly regimes and supporters.

The Houthi's have been doing very well, financially.

also note worthy:

There is a huge discrepancy of the value of the Yemeni Rial between Houthi- and government controlled areas:

In Aden the Rial was worth 1500 per USD, whilst in Sana'a it was worth 514 per USD. This was in Dec 23

Democracy Now recently did a brief interview with Helen Lackner, who has lived in Yemen for just over 15 years and written several books about Yemen

US Blocks Yemen-Saudi Peace Deal
antiwar. February 6, 2024
The US is purposely blocking a Yemen peace deal that was negotiated between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The US decision to re-designate the Houthis as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” will block the payment of public sector workers living in Houthi-controlled Yemen, who have gone without pay for years.
The payment of civil workers has been a key demand of the Houthis and is part of the first phase of the peace deal. The Houthis had asked for the salaries to be paid for using oil revenue that goes to the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, whose leaders are mainly based in Saudi Arabia. It’s unclear if the Saudi side agreed to the Houthi demand or if they decided to pay the salaries using other means.

Saudi arabia has been strangely commited ti the cease fire throughout 23, to the extend thst they largely ignored violations by the houthis like cross-border attacks.
Military activities were mainly between houthis and southern forces and aqap.

Interesting article, has a lot of good points to make. Disappointing conclusion. But well worth the read.
The houthis have manufactured and stockpiled quite an impressive amount of hardware. They have money and land and enjoy more and more popular support, stoked by recent events.
Where this leaves us wrt to the conclusion of that article i honestly don't know.
But the rise of the houthis could have been stopped or at least slowed down on many occasions, through political means.

Wrt recruitment and internal fighting - The houthis have released almost 7000 prisoners in north yemen in 23. Most have ended up as fighters on the n/s front line.
Saba news reports that almost 200 000 fighters have been recruited since oct 7 to join the Palestinian cause.
(Saba news is affiliated with the houthis)
