...and Yemen!

The houthis don't present an answer to yemens problems, but they fill a vacuum, an avoidable vacuum created by wetern policies.
This is the story of recent history. The Houthis, Taliban, Hizbollah, Hamas, even ISIS. These ugly forces don't appear out of nowhere, but again and again and again, Western policies are aimed specifically at crushing anything that hints at socialism or even social democracy, so they ignore, marginalise or persecute secular, progressive movements in any and all of the countries they interfere with. And they never learn their lesson. So here we are.

And yet, western powers were happy to support this as this was seen as the lesser evil, compared to left leaning equalitarian politics.
Do you have any articles or links to this? I tried to have a quick look but couldn't find much likely due to me not writing the right things. Just asking as I'd be interested and I'm on another site where this side of it isn't being discussed.

I don't have time atm, am at work, but generally the unification of yemen in 1990 is worth looking into for context.

A quick link from zahirs post

It provides background to class based politics in the south v tribal politics in the North and western involvement

The shipping lanes must remain clear of threat for the greater good of humanity. It is a cold winter.

Then the Houthi should attack Israel’s ships, not neutrals…
bcuster, i don't tend to get caught up in passing posts on here, but i have to come back to this as it's been bugging me for a couple of days...

What, in your opinion, is 'the greater good of humanity'? Is the greater good living in excess whilst there are wars and famines in other parts of the world? Actively and passively benefitting and profiteering from ongoing wars and in-equality?

And on this note - how do you define humanity? Who is part of humanity and deserves to benefit from a globalised neo-liberal trade system? 1st world countries? The people of Palestine? Yemenis, iraqis? Syrians, kurds, somalis?

Who isn't part of humanity, who is excluded from wealth, and why?

Who is neutral? Are there neutral nations, or is neutrality down to the individual? Is it part of an ideology to buy into?

Who doesn't deserve the badge 'neutral', and therefor deserves to be bombed?

Christ, i hope you haven't thought this through!

...and, to bring this back on topic, do you think these military actions you support will prevent the next crisis in the region? Do you think it will stop the houthis or whoever will replace them in the future?

To be clear - living standards are pretty low and have taken a nose dive for the vast majority of people over the last few years, all over the world, even in 'wealthier nations' and the 'developed world'. I don't believe in 'suffering for the greater good' and i don't want to be cold nor go hungry. Neither do i want my neighbours to experience hardship.
But current events won't fix things on a global scale, for the majority of people, in the short term, never mind mid- to long term.

But this is probably for another thread....

Attacking neutral shipping is not the answer to any of the equity problems you describe. Doing so will only upset the current balance and create more suffering for the houthis

The houthis don't suffer. They are thriving.

You got this around the wrong way.

I suspect the Houthis themselves will be mostly fine, at least in the area they control. The people in charge are usually fine. It's the really
poor people that are and continue to be at risk of starvation

The yemenis who are being bombed by the USN and RN are suffering needlessly due to the irresponsible pirates who are disrupting neutral shipping

The UK and the USA need not have bombed Yemen. The bombing killed people, but it will not stop Houthi forces attacking shipping. If the UK and the USA acted to stop the slaughter in the Gaza Strip, then the attacks on shipping by Houthi forces would cease. Perhaps Anglo-American imperialism should "jaw" rather than "war".

Ftr, a lot of very poor people have joined the houthis as mercenaries

I believe the houthis are using the strife in Gaza as a pretext to even old perceived scores with the US and UK
