You don't need to be disgusted yet, $4m is not the main sum of the judgment, it's just the compensatory element based on proven loss. The main sting usually comes with punitive damages, which are set by the jury and being discussed today. Depending on whether any local caps apply, punitive can be absolutely enormous.

Yep, as the NYT puts it: "Compensatory damages are based on proven harm, loss or injury, and are often calculated based on the fair market value of damaged property, lost wages and expenses, according to Cornell Law School. Punitive damages are designed to punish especially harmful behavior and tend to be granted at the court’s discretion, and are sometimes many multiples of a compensatory award."

Should clarify I'm not clear on that, Mark Bankston (plaintiff's lawyer) seems to think it's a 'reasonable multiple'. I doubt he's wrong, but... lawyer speak.
Presumably the court can also award legal costs etc, and I believe there are another 8 families seeking compensation? Lost track of details... need to get clarification somewhere.

Sadly, this is only a civil case so no jailtime. I know it would be difficult to prosecute, but you would think there would be some kind of criminal level harassment case that could be made of all this. He's been so persistent in his abuse of these people for no reason whatsoever, that there should be something other than civil law that applies.

They can be disbarred if they knowingly let a client perjure themselves. Their professional rules require them to inform the judge if a client insists on committing perjury. So yeah, it might have been done to protect themselves.
