A thread in praise of the humble jacket potato

I love potatoes in their jackets....when my kids were little and still at home, if I was knackered after work I'd always let them choose what we had for supper, and (YAY!) they always asked for potatoes in their jackets....I love the French for potatoes in their jackets.....it's pommes de terre en robes du champs....apples of the earth in the robes of the fields

That's well cool :)

The smell of potatoes baking always makes me think of being a little kid and going to firework displays with my mum and brother, or coming in from trick or treating/kicking up autumn leaves/general larking around at dusk, to find that mum had put some spuds on for tea. Total comfort food, in every sense. How sad that I'll never see either of them again, but I can have a jacket potato any time I like.

We had jacket spud tonight too with crispy bacon, beans and cheese.

I also love chilli and cheese, cheese and sweetcorn, tuna, cheese and red onion. Cheese is a common theme in my spuds.:)

1st place. melted cheese, baked beans and a few dashes of tabasco

2nd place. veg chilli, grated cheese, sour cream/yoghurt

3rd place. sweet potato and grilled oven baked halumi

I also adore it just with butter (usually a soya equivalent) and cracked black pepper.

we need a yumyum smiley for suburban

3 bean chilli topped with grated cheese is always a winner
yea i can dig that but i also add sour cream :)

We had jacket potatoes over the christmas period as I found a local shop had HUGE potatoes. Mmm. cheese and beans for me. Or cheese and pineapple. Or cheese and sweetcorn.

No to jacket pots. They're only acceptable when completely drowned in butter, and the jackets are fundamentally suspect.

Potatoes should be mashed or dauphinoised. Boulangere is an acceptable alternative if your life is under immediate threat from cholesterol.

I like 'em well done (no microwave please) with Beans and Cheese or Chilli and cheese. If doing them myself I open up and fluff up the inside prior to putting in the filling

 don't know.....the skin is the best part as far as i'm concerned. :)

especially if its a bit burnt

Definitely! People who leave the skins are COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT and should never be allowed to eat potatoes again.

A friend of my daughters had never had a jacket potato until she came to our house once, now they are her favourite dinner!

You can eat my peelings and I'll eat your potato.

Jacket potatoes are ace - food suitable for both peasants and gods

I'm happy with just butter, but also love other classic toppings such as baked beans or cheese. Fancy-pants toppings don't appeal to me really - the fluffy, butter-soaked potato and lovely chewy skin should be the focus of the meal :)

I bring you the delights of the turkish take on the humble jacket spud, Kumpir!

From the caption, this one contains:

Potato
Butter
Grated cheese
Russian salad (yak spit spit. I like coleslaw, but this shit is beyond the pale)
Grated carrot
4 or 5 chopped hotdogs*
Cig kofte
Mayo
Ketchup
Olive paste
Sliced green and black olives

Despite the suspicious nature of putting olives in jacket potato, these things are great!

*Specifically, grilled chicken hotdogs that are then boiled in water for a minute, then chopped up very finely

A particualry crispy skin should be savoured on its own after the inards have been eaten. We spread a little butter inside and then eat them at the end of the meal.

I find that 5 mins in the microwave on full pelt, then rub oil into the skins followed by a salt rub then into the oven for 1.5 hours @ 180 always produces the best crispy skins.

Quite, most of the good vitamins are in the skin. I rarely peel spuds anyway, even when I mash them.

I'm fancying a baked spud now too.

Don't think anywhere round here does em though.

We usually have em with Veggie sausage, beans and chopped onion at home If I want to get some fresh veg in the kids they like mushroom and spinach cooked into a tin of that condensed mushroom soup with some cheese and black pepper on which is also very nice.

Might have to pop to the shops at lunch and see if I can pick up a few biggies for tonight.

Oven = check
Olive oil = check
Sea salt = check
Black pepper = check
Baked beans = check
Cheese = check

I used to quite like beans with jacket potatoes but am always annoyed when I've taken the trouble to crisp the skin with oil and salt and then the tomato sauce from the beans despatches any hint of crispiness.

Garlic butter on jacket potatoes is the way forward, never thought of adding black pepper before - so simple, may try it tonight.

Christ I'm hungry

Use a slotted spoon to add the beans

I'm at home too, so it's baked spuds for me for lunch, but I have no cheese and seem to have acquired 'Mexican' Heinz Beans instead of normal. Anyone had these? I may be a ponce and have tapenade on the second spud

Never had Mexican baked beans, but the balti/curry/whateverthefucktheywerecalled flavour are NOT NICE

Yum!

Salt and olive oil the skin for extra crispyness.
My favourite fillings are (always with too much butter and black pepper):

1. Tuna, onion, sweetcorn and mayo
2. Heinz beans with mini sausages :)
3. Beans and cheese
4. Garlic Boursin

In actual fact, I've always found that baked potatoes are just as nice without the butter , particularly if there is no other filling involved - so just salt is fine.
