39 dead in lorry container in Essex, October 2019

Mad how for all its growth and new cities and decades of double digit growth and Shenzhen and all that shit... life in China is so still so shit for so many that this sort of thing still happens. It's a fucking disgrace.
But to come from China to here? That is horrible. No way to move from bad place in China to other place in China? If it involves this sort of deathly risk to get to the U.K., that is horrendous.

This is obviously devastating for all involved.

It'll be interesting to see what the official Chinese response is here. I note already the ambassador in London isn't even acknowledging that they are Chinese right now.

What is a snakehead? A gangster criminal?
It refers to gangs based in Fujian province of China that specialise in smuggling Chinese nationals to other countries. They're promised well paying jobs over here on arrival but with no documentation to work legally they end up as prostitutes, street dvd sellers, restaurant and agricultural workers (and notably cockle pickers like the 29 who died at Morecambe) to pay off the cost of the initial journey. Threats are often made against their families remaining in China to ensure their continued cooperation. The ones I've spoken to are mostly from Fujian itself though I've also met smuggled people from Guangdong and Guangxi as well as two North Koreans. I haven't spoken to any in the last few years as the pirate dvd market seems to have dried up completely now so they're rarely as visible as they were ten years ago.

Every Chinese person has a residence permit called a hukou that states where they're allowed to live and work. Moving to another area without employment prearranged would be even more dangerous than being paperless in the UK.

I didn't know that. So you can't just rock up in another city and decide to live there without some kind of job attached and then right ''permission" granted to be there?

You could go to another city and get some sort of work but you wouldn't be able to buy a house or car or send your kids to school and you'd probably struggle to rent anywhere decent or get proper medical care.

I don't think its been officially announced. The press I've seen are just using phrases like "its been reported" which just means they've read it somewhere else.

This strikes me as a situation the government could resolve if it really wanted to. Given the state apparatus and resources and all. Generally governments like this fix gangster problems by being the biggest gangster in town. Even a mass advertising campaign to warn people would have some effect.

Speaking as someone who briefly owned a small part of a (perfectly legal) small business in China it is unthinkable that something like the snakeheads could exist without some level of official protection (or protection from corrupt officials). We had to have a copper on the board just to open a little school doing evening classes in English. In many ways the Chinese state at local level is little more than a protection racket.

Internal migration in china is made very difficult for certain classes IIRC.

The point made above about the engineering of containers is a good one.
Many years ago I remember the occasional heartbreaking story of a child at play that would be trapped in a large dumped refrigerator. I seem to remember since those incidents domestic refrigerators of varying sizes can be opened from within.
It must surely be possible to have a system where sealed containers can be opened from the inside.
This incident is appalling.

Police get an extra 24 hours to question the truck driver.

British detectives investigating the deaths of 39 people found in a refrigerated truck in southeastern England have been given an additional 24 hours to question the driver on suspicion of murder.

The 25-year-old truck driver from Northern Ireland has not charged in the tragedy.

Police say in a statement Thursday that the recovery of the bodies, all Chinese citizens, is ongoing and that the post-mortem and identification process will take time.

The Latest: UK police get 24 hours to question truck driver

Not if they're padlocked and chained from outside. Which they will have been. They weren't accidentally in there.

It's breaking news, but Essex police have confirmed they were all Chinese nationals.

39 lives lost is such a terrible waste regardless of where they came from.

International trucks are sealed to get through customs and also to help prevent stowaways I guess.

Of course but knowing their nationality helps to understand a bit more what actually happened here. Given those poor souls were all Chinese it seems highly unlikely that they were in a refugee camp in Dunkirk and managed to break into the back when the driver was kipping. It seems highly likely that this is full on organised crime people smuggling

Yes. But that still doesn't (necessarily) implicate the driver. (I don't know if you were saying it does.)

This is actually an excellent point, there are plenty of people such as drivers and warehouse workers who have to clamber about in the back of these things for perfectly legitimate reasons. No matter how robust a company's attitude to H&S is there is always the possibility that someone will get trapped.
