Your daily cat and kitten news

Urgh. So Neela is having an overnight stay at the vets after being quite off for a couple of days. She's never really been ill the whole time I have had her but she's been off her food and sleeping more, not doing her normal hello meows etc.
I am mildly distraught.

The vet just called with an update as the initial review when I took her in didn't reveal anything obvious. They've done dome blood tests and possible issues are poor kidney function, diabetes or pancreatitis. The vet said they felt all were manageable but they were keeping her in for more tests, fluids, monitoring.

I'm hoping this is good news.

Had to WhatsApp my partner though who is in New Zealand. He loves her dearly so hard for him being away. Fingers crossed she's back at home by the time he gets back on the 3rd Jan.

Tiny Poo is mainly feeling hungry about it all 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh no!
Sounds like you spotted something was wrong and got her to the vet pretty quickly, hope she'll be back home soon.
Get well soon Neela!

from my visit to brixton yesterday for annual festive urban gathering, i dropped in to bookmongers on coldharbour lane.

pleased to report that popeye (known as tiger in a previous life) is still healthy and moderately grumpy - i was allowed brief petting privileges.

he still has a napping spot in the front window, along with his current reading matter.

substantially built tabby and white cat lazing in shop window napping spot, books behind him are titled 'dogs' and 'cod'

:)

So just spoken to the vet about Neela. Confirmed pancreatitis but with chronic kidney failure (she's nearly 18 btw). They wanted to check her urine for ketones and glucose because if her high glucose blood test but she peed on the blanket they gave her instead of in the litter tray. (Cats!)

She has had fluids and they have been trying to keep her warm as she is cold. There doesn't seem to be much they can do re the pancreatitis other than monitor and support and give pain killers.

They have suggested referral to a specialist.

I don't know what to do.

I'm very sad she is alone/I can't be with her. Been trying to stay busy/distracted. OH is in transit on his way back from NZ so I can't speak to him about it all.

This sucks.

Neela is hanging in in there but it's a bumpy ride. They determined she had fluid on her lungs this afternoon so she has had that drained and has perked up. She's staying in again tonight to see if the fluid comes back but initial reports were good.

Sadly this likely means there is something more sinister going on but no cause for the fluid issue identified as yet. Having worked in a cancer hospital for a while I'm aware this can be linked. As well as a selection of other things.

OH is not back til 3rd Jan but I've been updating him while he starts his journey back (but there's a scheduled stop in San Francisco).

Tiny Poo is being good company 😻

Neela is home for now. The vet felt she was much more stable after having the fluid removed. She's on a few different drugs and it's not really clear how long she will be here for.

I'm not sure if it was a mistake to bring her home but I imagine it was additionally stressful for her at the vets. She's not really a people person!

I've made her a bed for her on the sofa and I've moved her litter tray into the room. I'm sat next to her on the floor. She's rather enthusiastically eaten some biscuits but I took them away as I don't want her to gorge herself 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'm trying not to stroke her too much as she starts purring and I'm not sure if that might impair her breathing.

I'm finding it hard to judge what is fair right now but I hope she feels safer at home rather than at the vets.

I am glad to hear that Neela seems to be more stable - hope she perks up a bit now, good that she's had some food - I think the right decision to not let her eat too much in one go, little and often is better if they're not well.

Unfortunately Jakey doesn't seem to be very well today, he was OK first thing but when we woke up after a bit of a lie in he was a bit quieter than usual and he's been smacking his lips and gagging so I reckon he feels sick.
He did a great big slightly soft and very smelly poo, then sat in it which is a bit worrying in itself, then he did one of those howling vomits they do where they go round in circles yowling and just bought up foam, twice, so his stomach was empty.
He has had a small meal of wet (I gave him half his normal portion size) since then which he ate enthusiastically. He's shown no interest in dry. I'll offer him some more wet in a bit.

He normally spends a fair bit of the day pestering me for food, cuddles, blankie, interaction etc. but he's just being very quiet. Still gagging.
And the cherry on top - he just bit me, which is completely out of character. Only has his 2 bottom fangs so difficult to tell how much he meant it cos it didn't hurt or break the skin, but then he can't really do that.

Hopefully he's just having an off day and a little bit of a tummy upset, but I'm really worried, have had bad experiences with my previous boys at this time of year which isn't helping.
I'll phone the vet in the morning if there's no improvement.

Thanks everyone, he had 2 small meals of wet earlier and seems to have perked up a little in the last hour, now he's gone back to sleep on my lap wrapped in his blankie again.
I know he is elderly and has some health conditions - chronic pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease/renal insufficiency/failure but just please for the love of god not this week Jakey, please not this week.
I don't think I will cope particularly well when he goes regardless of timing, but the first week of Jan near the anniversaries of the loss of both my other cats would seem like particularly cruel timing from the universe.

I'm glad he seems a bit better Epona, hopefully it's just the shitty weather making him a bit down. Lilith has also seemed a bit listless today, although she's eaten OK. I wonder if cats get seasonal affective disorder/post Christmas blues, same as people.
